sauntering down Ashtray Beach
The pelicans and the extra-terrestrials
twitching to the smell of his feet

No one really knows him
but no one really cares
they say he did a prison nickel
for armed robbery of pubic hairs

And though that might explain the afro
and even the dreadlock stench
it don't say shit about the Sterno can
or his attachment to that pipe wrench

He's hefting it by the snack bar
he's brandishing it by the cabanas
he's cocking an ear as he taps the sterno can
and threatening a kid over bananas

the kid's been through this before
it's not worth one small banana stash
he drops the bunch and runs for the surf
The Scruple gives the bananas a smash

Now he's buttered up in Coppertone
he ain't self - conscious about his gut
as long as he can mash them ripe bananas
and the kid keeps his fucking mouth shut

He rides off into the dimming twilight
inking orange out over the foul sea
with a pelican - stallion betwixt his legs
and a pipe wrench where his heart used to be.

It's been a long time
since I punched a light bulb
