I find that I don't feel the need to do the dookie report or the eatin' sammich update, but I find it to be interesting, especially if you also link up to folks like Rachel Maddow, and some of your favorite politicians, musicians, and artists.

You're exactly right.


TWITTER is the most utterly pointless egocentric "social network" ever. It's just people posting "Status Updates" i.e. Facebook. Honestly, no one cares what you're doing.

It's more useful than that. People get their twitter updates in more places (like on their phones, or just when they're not logged into facebook), so status updates like "I'm at X bar if anyone wants to come" are possible (i.e. it replaces dodgeball). It's also good for polling on something in a nonintrusive way, when you would never send an email for the same purpose (e.g. a friend of mine recently asked "what's a substitute for 'quick and dirty' that i can actually use in a legal memo?").

Maybe you guys just have self-important friends?

Trivia buffs and headline watchers like it for its constant updating through otherwise dull workdays.

And it's a way for local communities, churches, schools, libraries, etc. to get information out immediately -- cancellations, postponements, reschedulings, sports scores, awards, directions to events, breaking local news, that sort of thing.

or you can use it to quickly hook up in bar bathrooms, or find willing folks for some park sex.

But Dale park sex is really cold right now.

I can see the wider use for it for sure. It's just that everyone I know just uses it as another status update so it's like keeping track of someone else's every move which I have zero interest in.
