Need a unique gift idea without adding to our growing conspicuous consumption problems?

Adopt an animal for your sweetheart!
Wolves: http://www.wolfhaven.org/adopt_a_wolf.htm
Goats: http://www.gardenharvest.org/adoptagoat0904.htm
and a multitude of other animals here: http://defenders.spacely.com/directedgi ... GID=HADOPT

Another good gift idea-- organic veggies and fruits delivered to your door. This one is in Portland only, but there are tons of places out there that will deliver fresh organic food to your doorstep!
http://www.manic-organic.com/
edit: ooops, looks like this place went out of business, but a quick google search on the web finds many other places to order from.

Also, for you west coasters, chicagoans, and non-alchohol-discriminatory areas-- wine delivered to your door:

hmm, sad, Rodney, since Valentine's Day is the greeting card industry's way of making you feel guilty and forcing you to buy unnecessary gifts for your "loved ones." Hey, if you really loved someone, wouldn't you be expressing that every day and not just on February 14?

Do you want to give me your husbands email address? I doubt he'll be reading this thread, and I don't want him to miss out on what you actually want.

Ha, thanks timmyjoe... I appreciate your willingness to help on my part, but my husband and I have already decided to take a sushi-making class at Uwajimaya for our gift to each other. :)

You're going to Japan to learn to make sushi? I'm sure there is probably a place in your neighborhood. ;)

i was just kidding - we don't usually get each much for valentine's day at all - usually go on a trip or out to eat. i do need to get a card though.

Goats are great. You can stick anything in front of them and they'll eat it.

It doesn't seem as unique when your girlfriend posts to the same message board you do.

I'll be buying myself something for Valentines Day, as I have for the past 25 years or so.... I'm thinking some cool vinyl figurines or stuffed animals from Kidrobot will do just fine....

Why do I feel like one of the only females left here who actually likes Valentines Day?

Or at least now that I'm married to the love of my life, I do.

I just find it kinda romantic. Then again I'm a giant sappy romantic deep down.

And sometimes couples are always on the go all year round and they need one day a year they damn well better show their romantic side to their loved one. ;)

I think you just told us why you like it...

Valentine's Day is a completely different beast if you're in a relationship/married/both... All it does is alienate the rest of us...

Jen, I think it's okay to like Valentine's Day! I just don't expect my husband to give me some bling or whatever just because it's Valentine's Day. We already celebrate birthdays, anniversary, and Christmas, so we both agree there's really no need to give each other "gifty" gifts on Valentine's Day. We usually just reserve the day (or the weekend) to do something together, whether that's taking a trip, hanging out at home, having a nice dinner out or whatever. It's totally up to the respective parties, in my opinion, and my husband and I have our agreement!

And Postmersh, don't be upset if you're not in a relationship. Celebrate singlehood, my friend, while you still have it! :)

How about having a birthday the day before Valentine's Day and only having like one valentine ever? Talk about a pity party.

Hmm.... Valentine's Day, huh?

With the exception of the wonderfully tacky gifts (talking pig -- so awesome), I do not expect this Valentine's Day to do much for me. Actually, I'm anticipating my most bitter Valentine's Day yet!

So who here's gonna step up and by my Valentine?
