Worst morning ever.

We knew it was coming, she'd been really sick and they found out earlier this week it was advanced bone marrow Cancer.

But it still didn't make it any easier. She was josh's cat, he got her while in college several years ago. The cat with opposable thumbs. Yup, she had thumbs. She was a sweetheart too.

Anyways, I didn't realize how hard that would be. At least we got to be with her through the end.

Awwww, sorry to hear that Jen...

Losing a pet can be just as bad as a friend or even family member!

I remember having to give two of my cats away after my mom died, and i couldnt bring em back to NY with me...I had em at that point for about 16 years each, and they were both sick...A family friend agreed to adopt em..It was just as hard as everyhting else i had to deal with that month.

I'm truly sorry. I'm one of those people who can't get through life without pets, so I've been there a few times & its never easy. Nice way to honor the kitty with a pic on Obner.

RIP & GodSpeed Mittens

I'm sorry to hear that, Jen.

I'm afraid we are going to have to put our beagle to sleep in the next few months. She is getting up there in age. Never had to put a pet to sleep, but I imagine that its not awesome.

i've had to do it a few times, and as much as it sucks you have to remind yourself that it's preferable to ending a life with a period of great suffering.

putting an animal to sleep might have been the most distressing thing i've ever done.

Still, chase is right.

Sorry to hear that, Jen. I know it's painful for you and Josh, but I particularly hope your little guy is handling it okay.

I am so sorry, we just put my dog who I have had since I was 11 (I am 26) to sleep last week. It's been horrible, I totally know how you feel. He lived with my parents- they went away this week bc they couldn't deal with being home without him.

That was a Hemingway cat, you know? They have the trait of the extra digit on the paws. If'n memory serves, there was a big group of cats on an island, and they were a bit inbred (as you can imagine), and that was the result. Great cats though, no other problems - my uncle had one. I'll dig around and see if I can find something on them.

Thanks guys.

It hurts like a bitch at the moment. I keep thinking she's going to pop out from under one of the beds. I keeep crying off and on. It's a crappy feeling.

And I think our other cat senses it but can't tell. He was sniffing around a little when we got back without her(he watched us put her in the carrier and leave with her) and he's been meowing a bit. My mom said one of her dogs grieved horribly when my mom had to put the other dog to sleep.

She always used to crawl into the bed every time I was in it, in fact I always went to bed first so she used to follow me to the room, wait til I got in bed then would jump up and sleep above my head all night, often licking my forehead or Josh's. It's going to be weird not to have her around doing that anymore.

Yeah, a few years ago I had to take the family cat (19 years old) to get put down after it had a stroke. It was pretty grim handing it over to the vets assistance while it meowed and cried.

Not a cat person. Probably never will be. But that's horrible. When I was younger our family dog died in her sleep. But it was kind of expected. To have to make that descision must have been heartbreaking. I'm soory for your loss.

I'm glad to hear you guys made the right decisions, despite how hard everything is right now. I'm sorry you had to go through that, but everything was done for the best.

Sad indeed. My heart goes out to you guys. Watching pets (animals) suffer is right up there with children and elderly people.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody. Mittens was a great cat and a great friend. She and I were together for five years and she'll be missed terribly. Again, thanks.
