I'm sure there's any number of reasons, from people enjoying pain to the ritualistic aspects of it, and probably most importantly, the desire to set yourself apart as an individual from anyone else.

the last of which really makes me wonder how the Japanese haven't stumbled across this and run apeshit with it, as they tend to do with other American hobbies and subcultures. I wonder if it's some sort of deep-seated cultural thing. Do the Japanese have any history with piercing/modification? Obviously not on par with Africa or the Indian subcontinent, but I can't really think of anything.
