each year, Nirvana becomes even more unlistenable.

I just don't listen to them much anymore.
But when I do put them on, they do sound pretty good -- especially the songs that didn't get radio play; still sounds fresh.

If it's unlistenable to you because it's personally painful, then that's not really the fault of the music is it?

I'd hardly call it personally painful.

I would call it shitty.

In Utero keeps getting better with age. Nevermind's production sounded dated a few months after it as recorded but the songs are all still fantastic.

15 years seems about right.

I remember when I heard about his death I was actually thin.

I'm somewhere between you and Dave. They weren't one of my favorites back in the day, so I have never listened to them in excess. I'll put on the unplugged album now and then, and find it enjoyable and would never classify them as "unlistenable".
The 15yrs is a bit mind blowing, since I am sure I still know people with a fetish for his death memorabilia that drone on about how great they were and tragic it was like it was yesterday.

it's strange to me that a 14 year old middle school kid was born after he died, and when I was in middle school thinking Zeppelin were some ancient band I was discovering, they were a relevant and active band while I was alive.

Gone the way of Neil Young?
A few years from now he'd bring the electric guitars back and put out another album of tear-your-face-off rock?
