Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros: Streetcore

For my money, this posthumous release from Joe and the boys was the best solo album of his career. It's still a bit melancholy listening to it, knowing it was the last thing he would record. But, this one's a keeper. Coma Girl was a great single that should have been a hit and the rest of the album is filled with a mix of musical experiments incorporating reggae, blues, rock and whatever else was catching his ears at the time. But, for me, the songs just come together into something more cohesive and memorable without on this one than they had throughout the rest of his solo career. Some of hsi solo records to me tend to get a bit samey listening through, like there was one decent idea, stretched thin over the course of a record. This one seems filled with ideas that he fleshed out just enough to get some structure, but didn't hone until they turned into a generic mish mash.

In my opinion, the new Sonic Youth alternates between boring and just plain bad.

Actually I do like some Sonic Youth...mostly the stuff their bigger fans tend to think is too commercial. Personally, I think when they stop fucking around and actually try to make songs, they can sound pretty great but they don't so so nearly enough and instead insist on masturbatory indulgence and pretentious arty shit.

This was my first listen. It's OK. Certainly not the sort of thing I find intolerable, but sort of like with Wavves, I'm not really sure why it merits any attention.

I mean, some of the songs are decent. It could grow on me a little.

Edit: "Gypsy Hand" is pretty cool.
