this is an entry in slate's culture blog. . . i thought it was interesting.

My brother once lived down the hall from two guys who were music guys. They had a wall of compact discs, neatly arranged. One February, for no apparent reason, they put all of the CDs in the closet—except for 13 or so Tom Waits albums, lined up on the mantle. After a few weeks of listening exclusively to Waits, they resumed their omnivorous listening habits. Waits acted as a palate cleanser, allowing them to care about new sounds once more. When I'm tired of movies, or music, or television, or books, I follow their strategy and rely on certain touchstones to get me interested again: Blue, Solo Faces, Dazed and Confused. Am I alone in this? Send me your cultural palate cleansers at michaelagger1 at gmail dot com

how is listening to only one artist (or watching just one movie or just playing one video game) different from simply not indulging in whatever media it is we're trying to cleanse?

a few weeks ago i was on vacation and the only songs i heard for six days were for about a half-hour while record shopping one day. when i got back home, the first album i played sounded incredible.

In general, I think listening to a whole lot of stuff by any one artist can help me to appreciate other sounds more.

It can also give me a greater appreciation of just what makes that artist unique and of their specific songwriting perspective, but that's a different topic.

So I guess I sort of do this, but I've never thought of it as palate cleansing. And I never knew that sorbet was considered a palate cleanser.
