I was reading about the Korean movie "oldboy" on the Guardian UK website www.guardian.co.uk and now i really want to see this movie.

Has anyone seen it? I don't have a multi-region dvd player but it's times like these that i wish i did.

I couldn't find it at Amazon or Netflix so i assumed it wasn't available. I doubt anywhere in Boise will carry it. I'll have to wait for a release date on the one in my saved queue at Netflix.

that's weird, our local video store has it. maybe i'm wrong, as i didn't rent it, i just assumed (and you know what happens when you assume). they get some sketchy stuff sometimes, so who knows.

I think there's an international Region 1 out, but not a domestic one.... Your video store either got a bootleg, or ordered the import version...

They're planning on releasing it in theatres soon as well - I think I saw a trailer for it. More excited about Kung Fu Hustle myself, though...

I rented it several months ago. The DVD was either Region 1 or regionless, I dunno, but it's already out there.

I really wasn't that impressed by the movie. It hinged entirely on a plot twist and initial suspense, but I felt like it was ultimately hollow. But then, I'm generally put off by Asian films that push too hard, too deliberately, to try to be "gut-wrenching".

Wanna see a great Korean film? Watch Sping, Summer, Fall, Winter... Spring. Both that and Oldboy are pretty heavy-handedly moralistic, but the former is far, far better although otherwise entirely different.

I have a region 1 disc that I bought from my favourite indie video store, but I'm guessing it's a bootleg since the proof of purchase is for "About Schmidt" and the synopsis on the back is very poorly translated. Here's a scan.

I think it's an excellent film. It gets a little weak at the end, but the first hour is amazing, and there's a fight scene that was done in a single take that needs to be seen.

If you like Chan-wook Park's work, then I also suggest you check out the short he did for "Three... Extremes". It's incredible.

Being a Texas Rangers fan, I most certainly DO NOT.
