Television -- Marquee Moon

Had some time in the car yesterday, and in the spirit of the last week I was going with The Dead for my driving tunes...but of course the CD player crapped out. Somebody had given me a bag of old tapes awhile back -- reached in & pulled out Marquee Moon.

Holy shit is this good; deserving of the praise its gotten over the years. I didn't realize just how guitar-driven Television was, and it's because the only version of Marquee Moon (the song) I knew was by Kronos Quartet. While that version obviously has soft edges, these songs are angular and driving. Much more in tune with, say, Talking Heads or even the Jam. And "Friction" reminds me of XTC.

Can't wait to listen for a 2nd time.

Welcome to the club!
Next, you really need to hear The Blow Up. The sound quality is pretty crappy -- bootleg quality -- but the songs in a live setting are pretty fucking explosive. If you can handle the hiss and all that, definitely pick it up.

I have had 2 TV MM's stolen in one year. Someone really does not want me to listen to that album anymore.

Nice thread topic. I'll weigh in on what I was turned on to last week (out of many) and have listened to about 4 times since (Thx Dalen):

I honestly wish I had had that kind of instant visceral reaction to it, but it still hasn't clicked.

It took me a little while with Marquee Moon, too, but when it clicked, it clicked big time. I absolutely love "Friction", and I guess I can see how it's a little like early XTC.

jasn, what album is that? Image link seems broken.

First heard it when i was 16 or so.

Can still remember that visceral feeling, the same I got when I first heard the velvet underground or the birthday party, just being overwhelmed that this wasn't NEW music.

Better late than never- and always nice to see that something can surprise you this late in musical life.

I love that feeling when you finally listen to something you've known about for a long time, but never heard... and its every bit as great as billed. I usually bring a jaded restraint into such a moment, so when I get blown away, its such a wonderful feeling
