Since football is over for many of us...
Let's talk baseball.

WTF is up with the Reds landing Aroldis Chapman? 6 years $30.25 million? We beat out the Yanks and Sox? Oh wait...here it is...
Quote:
Chapman doesn't speak English and knew virtually nothing about major league teams. The Reds plan to have catcher Ramon Hernandez work out with him in Florida.

He had no one to inform him:
Quote:
The Reds drew 1.7 million fans during their ninth straight losing season, their smallest gate since 1986.

One might also argue that the Reds are more willing to take risks on high-upside young players than the Yankees or Sox.

Agreed. This guy hasn't proven anything other than he can throw the ball fast.

Yup, the Orioles were apparently in the hunt, but decided that it wasn't worth the chance that this guy was going to tank.

even if chapman isn't familiar with MLB teams, his agent is and would not have steered chapman to sign with cincy if it weren't the best option. ol' dusty is going to run that arm ragged, though.

also, um, ryan church is taking a physical with the pirates today.

Dusty will be gone by the time Chapman is ready to be abused in a Reds uniform.

The Blue Jays reportedly offered him around $25M but the Reds beat 'em.

That's a whole lotta $$$ for a team like that, & a guy like that. The GM of my Royals has been pulling one bone-head move after another lately, so I like the deal we signed w/another Cuban defector ( Noel Aurguelles - sp? ) a lot more.

Oh - & McGwire's admitted to being juiced. What a shocker.

I really think this is because of the poor showing in HOF voting. Already you hear some very vocal writers speaking up for McGwire and Bonds. Revisionist history.

More like a revision to the revisionist history.

I don't think, rightfully, I can describe this as a "promo, cut" -- only such as LooGs & Fu have the cultural discernment sufficient enough to make that determination -- but damning nonetheless.

What, 6 weeks until pitchers and catchers report? It's about time.

With the Roku player I got for Christmas I'll be subscribing to MLB Premium so I can watch as many Blue Jays games as possible during what is sure to be their most losing season to date. Can't wait!

Watching the Tigers without Granderson is going to suck.

I'm actually pretty excited for the new O's season. I'm seeing actual steps taken to rebuild. We've got some good young talent, and while we won't win anything, they will be exciting to watch. Last year was a lot of fun seeing Wieters, Bergesen, etc out there starting their careers.

Anyone else see this in Bud Selig's latest statement with regards to McGwire's interview:

Quote:
The so-called “steroid era” – a reference that is resented by the many players who played in that era and never touched the substances — is clearly a thing of the past, and Mark’s admission today is another step in the right direction

LOLZ.

Just go the fuck away Bud. Has there ever been a commissioner in any sport that is respected less?

That's a whole other level though isn't?

I'm talking about sports where regular season games routinely out draw the home shopping network. (at least in the US)

I first watched baseball seriously in 1985 when they were playing the Royals in the ALCS. I was 7 and chose the team based on their mascot. Since Indy never got a team, I just stuck with them over the years. If the Jays hadn't had '92 and '93 I may have jumped ship for the Reds or Cards.

Similarly, for the NFL I'm a Packer fan because my dad rooted for them when I was little. The Colts moved here but in my head as a 6 year-old I already had a team so I stuck with them. The Packers were good when I was in Jr. High and High School so they gave me reason to keep the enthusiasm up.

This is who I think about when I think of that era of Blue Jays.

I think that I'm done with the Cubs.
(I say that every year.)
