my bro and his clan found a cool way to fund independent art projects through Kickstarter. works kinda like groupon, where the user sets a monetary goal and people commit a donation. if the goal is met on or before i certain amount of time, the user keeps the money and kickstarter takes a small percentage. if the goal is not met, no harm no foul, and everybody walks away scott free.

asobi seksu raised 8 grand on this to fund a tour. and im thinking of using it to fund my label's flagship release.

here's a link to a promo video my brother's partner made (bro-toots wrote and recorded the music, too)

That's cool. I've seen some films get financed that way. Its cool because you really have nothing to lose. The cool thing is, you can offer incentives. Like, if you give $10 you get the first release, or $150 and you get a personalized song or something. If you get it up, post it up--I'll donate to help you out.

This site's idea exemplifies the internet at it's finest. Bro-toot's-significant-other is getting a donation, and I'll definitely pledge to your label if you list it.

Hey Toots - what ever happened to your new label kickstarter?

long story short...

i got the whole plea-for-cash set up, then got bogged down in "what my website, etc should look like" instead of "do i have enough quality material in the pipe to start a release schedule."

so essentially, ive pushed back an actual label launch until i have enough releases to give the illusion that i am somewhat prolific, which is almost happening. so far i have 2 EPs recorded for my solo project (JC Autobody) and a 3rd one on the way, a solid 7" worth of material for another post-brazil project/persona called Jonathon Christmas (the "shhh" guy), permission to do all the brazil records in vinyl, plus some various and sundry tracks that we either recorded in basements or with fridmann that never got released.

thanks for asking!

Yeah, really liked what you shared a while ago. Sorry, can't be more specific. Tipsy. But what they said.

I was gonna go with that, but I seem to throw that phrase around too much these days, even if the Mrs. still gets a chuckle out of it.

Julia Nunes made a kickstarter project for her new record. She was asking $15K, and she has ended up making $65K. Incredible. Just saw her post a report CNN did on it, on her FB page. Kickstarter and programs like indiegogo are the future of music methinks. Pretty good for a girl who writes silly songs on the uke, and has opened for Weezer, Ben Folds, and Ben Kweller.

Well since we have this thread...

A friend of mine is working on an iPad game and has a kickstarter page for it:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/add ... r-the-ipad

My honest opinion is that it's a good idea for a game with solid concept art and, knowing him, will likely be really well executed, but I think his monetary goal for kickstarter is too high. I mean, it's obviously too high. So I don't know what it will mean for him if he doesn't reach it, but I hope he gets the game made either way.

they've got their pitch and incentive schedule down pretty solid.

painfully funny to see an artist with no video and rewards like "i'll personally call you from my cellphone" asking for $10K to record their mediocre album.

Julia Nunes ended up with $77,888. Incredible.

Do you think there is a lot of interest in people wanting to kickstart my life of leisure?
