Big Star - #1 Record

This one sounds the most dated to me of all of the three proper albums, but may have the best overall songs. I don't know how you can listen to a song like "Thirteen" and not be impressed.

Image
Devo - Hardcore Devo, Vol. 2

There are a few clunkers on this one, but overall it's really a great set of tunes. It shows the early vision of Devo, and may be a snapshot of Devo at its quirkiest.

Image
Yoyoyo Acapulco - The Pleumeleuc Experience

Speaking of quirky, this one is among the goofiest albums I've heard. It's an album of ukelele pop, and most of it is pretty enjoyable stuff. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, though.

The Wonder Stuff - The Eight-Legged Groove Machine

Purchased at the recommendation of Obnerites who said that it is better than Never Loved Elvis. First listen: I am digging it a lot. But I still think that Elvis is a better record. At any rate: thanks for inspiring me to finally pick this one up, because it is still a wonderful purchase.

Well, give me some time with this one. But that is my first impression.
I mean, I don't hear a "Size Of a Cow" or Welcome to the Cheap Seats" on this one. But then, this is only my first listen, so give me a little time with this one.
(And I did get the reference.)

john zorn's book of angels pt. 13. I really enjoy it as all the other parts, but this one is very different compared to the others. I think it's 4 female singers, a capella. weird combination of languages, as I hear hebrew, portuguese and spanish. at least. well but it doesn't really fit into the general indie catalogue...

Yeah, I was just giving you shit. 8LGM is definitely a different animal (and it has been probably 10 years since I heard Elvis).

Erykah Badu: New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

I'm always anxious to hear a new Badu release. I'm just starting my listen so don't yet have much to say, but it sounds like she's still on the experimental path and drifting further from her early neo-soul records. I'm sure I'll be listening to this a ton and have more opinions on it after a few spins.

Ray Davies - The Kinks Choral Concert

This didn't appear to me to be a good idea on paper: Ray Davies in concert doing mostly Kinks tunes backed not only by his band, but also the Dessoff Chamber Choir. But I figured it's a free download, what can it hurt? Now I'm very glad I did download it because it is a fine performance. I think it's due in part to not overdoing the choir's part in it (despite doing a a capella version of "Set Me Free"), and due in part to having a great backing band that, along with Ray, perform the songs really well. Additionally, the recording is good, and the song selection, for the most part, is great (there's an emphasis on late-60s era Kinks tunes). To download the full concert (as one mp3 file) click here.
