so i heard a lotta good things about napoleon dynamite, and my wife did as well, and we were both in the mood for a comedy, so we rented "napoleon dynamite" on directv ppv. BO. RING. The movie had the personality of its main character. i couldn't believe i paid $4 for that crap. i committed the ultimate crime of giving someone else my semi-hard-earned money to inflict mental pain on me.

we were so disgusted and wanted at any cost to laugh a little, that about 45 min thru we bought another ppv movie, "anchorman". another big pile of crap, but i did at least chuckle a couple times. another $4 wasted. we survived the end of that without committing a double murder suicide, then watched a couple seinfelds from season 3 to remember what it is to laugh.

Never saw Napolean Dynamite, but own Anchorman and Wake Up Ron Burgundy, the bonus movie. Have watched them at least once every weekend since I bought them. So clearly I'm a superfan, but there has to be a 1:1 ratio of love to hate for Anchorman.

Hmmm. I enjoyed ND. It wasn't a howler, but it made me chuckle many times. It's just an ordinary movie about ordinary lives, and it gets better the more I see it.

It was refreshing to get away from the overwrought, typical Hollywood "normal lives" movie.

It helped a lot when I re-watched Napoleon Dynamite and Anchorman with a bunch of friends, as opposed with just one other guy (ND) or drink drank drunk (Anchorman).

I'm with you, paladisiac. I saw ND for the first time the other night, and was extremely disappointed. It was like they were trying to make a wes anderson movie, and failed miserably.

Anchorman sucked too. The overall premise was good, but the jokes just fell flat.

i loved anchorman and ND, but i can see why napolean wont make everyone howl as much as i am prone to do

my money wasting thie weekend was on ihearthuckabees which was totally hollywoods attempt at a wes anderson movie, and that bored the shit outta me. if i was in the theater i might have walked out on that garbage

NP is a great movie. its been a while since i have seen a comedy this good. you really need to give it another try. on the other hand, i thought anchorman was horrible. i actually wasted money seeing it at the theatre.

Anchorman is better, in my opinion, but there are a couple of scenes in Wake Up that are just killer. It's no surprise that WURB is cobbled together from different takes, so in some cases the scenes are almost the same from Anchorman, but with different lines. Sometimes the new lines work, sometimes they don't. If you loved Anchorman, try to see the second one.

I'd rather eat a plate full of dried up dog shit than suffer through another viewing of Napoleon Dynamite. Simply awful.

Easy for you to say in Chicago. If you were here, I'd dropkick your Scrubs-loving ass. For real.

David O. Russell isn't really "Hollywood" and has been making movies as long as WA has. I don't see how IHH was similar to WA movies, other than the use of Jason Schwartzman.

I liked ND way better than Anchorman which I found as thoroughly unfunny as Dodgeball

Anchorman proves that making a movie set in the 70s doesn't automatically makes it funny.

ND was funny when it had its own ideas (30-40% by my estimation).

There's a way to do this and a way NOT to do it. I fear you did the latter, though it's not your fault... you heard how great it was before you saw it, and then you saw an hour and a half of "not much" and didn't get it.

I made the mistake of seeing ND for the first time with 2 friends who knew every line, in a theater full of people just like them. That movie is subtle, and really doesn't kill people at ALL on the first viewing. So when a guy walks on screen and the whole room busts into laughter before anything has happened, it's not funny. Not even kinda funny. It ruins it. I walked out afterwards saying I probably wouldn't ever see it again, but at the urging of one of the friends, I gave it a second try at home. Then I got it. I've seen it about 7 or 8 times since, and it gets better every time.

Anchorman I haven't seen yet, but I'm trying to ignore everything I hear about it so it has a chance.

I think to enjoy Napoleon Dynamite, you have to really get to know the characters. That's why many people, including myself, have stated that you have to see the movie more than once to really appreciate it. Most people seem to expect laugh out loud jokes every single minute, but much of the humor is subtle, and you really only start to understand and appreciate some of the jokes the second time around.
