so, back when i was married, i cosigned onto about 14K in student loans for my then-wife. bad move, i know, but i had done the band for like ever, and the deal was once that was over it was her turn to go back to school and whatnot and i would turn around and support her.

then the divorce happened

and then i figured out just how bad my ex was with money. i'm talking almost $10K in maxed out credit cards in under three months. a cashed out 401K. mysteriously disappearing joint funds. a foreclosure notice that was conveniently hidden. these were like "personality disorder" style spending sprees.

so we went to mediation, got it inked up in legalese that she would "try" to refinance the loans into her name and i would "try" to refinance the mortgage into my name.

i went ahead and refi'd the mortgage within 3 months of the decree....aaaand my name is still on the student loans. two years later.

well these loans are going into active repayment status this month, and with interest, they're up to $18K.

just today, i got an e-mail from the daycare she put my son in over the summer while he was with her, saying she hadn't paid a single cent of her bill for when he was there.

so i have no reason to believe that she's going to make good on her half of the bargain re: the loans

so im probably going to court soon

But yes, I have learned my lesson and no longer actively cultivate relationships with the craziest chick in the room anymore. I prefer something a bit quirky yet harmless these days. I'm too old for that bullshit now.

Well, the moral of the story is I was involved with various psychopaths of the sometime criminal variety for a couple decades but am now divorced and sworn off seriously mentally ill women for he last 2-3 years and couldn't be happier. Sure, sometimes something from your past jumps up and snips at you (took me years and years to pay off all the drug debt when I got out of that game several years ago and I still will occasionally get accosted by some shady characters wanting to suck me back into some shit), but you move on and find people you dig and have a good life, whatever that means to you. Sure, you may be broke for a while, but you get to hang out making cheeseburgers every Tuesday night and drink some good beer with a woman who for some unexplainable reason seems to actually give a damn about you.

I don't get the "bad move" part here. As long as you are married and don't have at least one foot out the door you do these things for your spouse. It sucks that you are still dealing with this crap and that she hasn't stepped up and assumed responsibility but you weren't dumb to support her while your heart was still in it.

I have my own stories but I prefer not to share them in a public forum. I feel lucky to be 100% out, have had no communication in nearly 10 years, and don't see any point in doing anything that might have even an infinitesmally small chance of changing that.

In other words, I'm following this good advice of yours:

me and my girl just broke up, sucks but at least I'm getting laid on a regular basis...man that's nice.

My girl took me to a house party with the guy she was banging, I was all buddy buddy with him. Seemed like a nice guy.

My brother co-signed a new car loan with his girlfriend years ago (not a cheap new car either), and 2 months later she broke up with him. Luckily nothing came of it, but it could've been really bad.

What with the drunken beratings, premature ejaculation, massive predilection for dangerous substances and terrible career and geography choices, I'm probably the shitty ex in most of these situations. And certainly will be when this one's had enough of The Gar Treatment.

This has nothing to do with exes but since there isn't a thread about intentionally pissing off 'in-laws' I'll stick it here.

At the weekend the girlfriend and I went out for dinner, we talked and she told me her brother, whom I have never met and who is apparently something of a Chicago wise guy with a volcanic temper, was asking about me on one of their trans-Atlantic phone calls. When she told him I had a Masters degree in Classics, he remarked I must be a "fag" as only a "fag" would study a "homo" subject like Classics.

Now I don't think there is anything wrong with homosexuality but this was obviously intended as a broadside against me and although I didn't think much about it at the time, the more I brooded on it the more I thought 'I can't let this go unanswered'. So I sent him a invite to a social networking site, the first direct contact between us, which went as follows.

Most of my exes are pretty tame compared to all of this. However my room mate in colleges exe was a miserable bitch. Me and my room mate had gone in on a sheet of acid to sell and she stole it. I couldn't ever prove it, but she pretty much disappeared after it happened and she was pretty into the blow. Also she was an ex felon who had done time when she was in high school for breaking into a sports store. My room mate had terrible taste in women.
