my dad broke down and left the room even during Good Morning Vietnam. not just from Williams' acting.

I also like Swing Kids a lot. Not a movie a lot of people get excited about but I like it.

War movies are not my favorite genre at all, but some films are awesome enough to eclipse what I tend to find tedious.

these were what immediately came to mind. then as I thought about it a bit I'll take the time to add:

Dr. Stragelove, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
The Hurt Locker
Jarhead

No Patton?

Also,

Cross of Iron
Battle of Britain
Glory

I rather enjoyed Sea of Sand but I'm kinda into the whole LRDG thing.

I'd say Saving Private Ryan is probably one of the worst movies of all time. Just dreadful on every level.

I always liked sub movies.

Run Silent Run Deep
Crimson Tide(cold war)
Gray Lady Down(not really a war movie)

Midway - I still remember seeing this in the theater. Pretty horrific on a large screen to a 7 year old.

edit: Oh shit how could I forget one of my favorites, M*A*S*H*

Definitely seen and like like most of what's been listed. Still need to see Thin Red Line.

Glory is fantastic.

I can understand being annoyed by some of the Speilberg-isms with Saving Private Ryan and the thin "let's get Ryan home propaganda" storyline but dreadful on every level?

That first 30 minute opening sequence is one of the best war sequences ever done IMO.

I was really into Glory in middle school when my parents and grandparents were taking me to a bunch of civil war spots.

Like Jaws, and most of his other watchable movies, I like the quiet parts better than the loud.

Dad says Hanks' part is perfect. Great Leadership.

Gettysburg--Not sure if this would appeal to people who don't go into it with a familiarity of the generals and events leading up to the battle. I'm a Civil War geek so I can watch this film a million times and see something new each time. I never saw the follow up, Gods and Generals, because it got such poor reviews.

All Quiet on the Western Front might be the top on my list.

I wouldn't call stuff like Kelly's Heroes or the Dirty Dozen or Stalag 17 war flicks, but they're always great. I guess the Great Escape would be in there as well.

The Green Berets
Where Eagles Dare
The Guns of Navarone
Hamburger Hill

I seem to remember liking Enemy at the Gates more than I should've

My father was a helicopter crew chief in Vietnam and says "Go Tell The Spartans" is the best and most realistic Vietnam movie he's ever seen.

Don't know that I've seen enough to offer much, beyond echoing love for "Dr. Strangelove" and saying that "The Thin Red Line" is a ponderous piece of shit.
