Fuck-all great album. Orchestral pop that (IMO) beats The Zombies for greatest of that genre, ever. Backed by a nearly unrecognizable Little Feat, the songs are somewhat paradoxically literate, complex, studied and highly emotional, all at once. But above all, it is beautiful. High point is the absolutely stunning title track.

Collection of singles, live cuts and other stuff the band had laying around. Still holds up as a pretty great record, on it's own, with some real classics on here, including the original version of "Play That Fast Thing One More Time", "Why Do We Hurt the One We Love", and a great cover of Ronnie Self's "Home In My Hand".

Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstacy

I think this is the best Steely Dan album.

Image
Gong - Flying Teapot

Awesome jazzy stoner-prog. They put out another album this same year that is supposedly pretty similar (Angel's Egg), and it's on my to-buy list, based on how much I love this one.

Secos e Molhados - s/t

Probably stealing billy g's thunder here as he recommended this to me a long time ago. I only just around to listening to it this year, and it's great, really catchy '70s Brazilian glam rock. Really fun stuff.

Al Green with a Birmingham pedigree and Memphis-based band. That pretty much sums it up. One of the great, underappreciated soul records of the early 70's. Sure there was the one (minor) hit, but the whole record was solid, top-to-bottom. Frederick Knight could have been The Man.

Not, not is best by a long shot. Still, there are quite a few songs on there that make this one worth hearing for Emitt's fans, as well as for fans of Badfinger, solo McCartney, The Raspberries, and other pop of that ilk.

I love Head Hunters.

That Eno album came out in '74, though.

Other stuff:

Image
Kraftwerk - Ralf and Florian

I used to talk up early Kraftwerk a lot, and this is my favorite of their first three OOP records. I put "Tanzmusik" on a mix or two.

Image

Can - Future Days

This is the second-best Can album. I think I've mentioned Can before.

Willie Nelson - Shotgun Willie

My favorite Willie Nelson album.

Image
Donald Byrd - Black Byrd

Another really good jazz/funk fusion record.

Damn yeah, recorded in '73, released in Jan of '74 -- I always think '73 for some reason - ah well.

edit: looks like released in '73 in the Netherlands...must've read about its release date that way sometime ago.
