I know there are all kinds of threads already for this year (the top 3, rolling best of, the leak thread), but this is meant to be a recommendation thread where you really try to sell the rest of us on a few albums that we probably haven't heard or given a fair chance. So like all of the "You Should Hear This" threads were intended to be, this should be more about really convincing people to check out a few of your favorites, not just listing out a whole bunch of them.

What 2011 albums should Obners hear before making their year end lists?

Ok, I'll play.

Quote:
Ringo Deathstarr may be based in Texas in the year 2011 but they sound like they were beamed into the future from London circa 1990. No doubt wearing bowl cuts and stripey shirts. Their debut album, Colour Trip, is more of a nostalgia trip as they delve deeply into shoegaze, dream pop, noise pop, and generally seem to be auditioning for a spot on the Creation roster between My Bloody Valentine and Ride. How you feel about the album probably has a lot to do with how you feel about nostalgia, imitation, and immersing yourself so totally in the style of your influences that you sound exactly like them. If you take a more positive stance, you can commend the trio’s skill at re-creation, and marvel at how “Chloe” is a perfect MBV-meets-Medicine copy, or how “You Don’t Listen” sounds like a lost Jesus & Mary Chain single. You could lose yourself in the warmly fuzzy guitars that flood the album from beginning to end, or let the honey-sweet vocals of bassist Alex Gehring wash away your nagging doubts. She sounds especially dreamy on the slow grooving “Other Things” and the warped dance track “Imagine Hearts.” Elliot Frazier's vocals are equally fine, whether he’s growling through noise-drenched rockers like “Chloe” or crooning like a Reid on swoony songs like “Tambourine Girl.” Pastiche or not, the album is incredibly catchy and hook-filled, and shows the band equally adept at rocking out loudly or drifting noisily off into the clouds. They invest their love of noisy pop with so much love, energy, and hummable tuneage, that it’s impossible to hate on them that much. Even if you take the uncharitable approach and call them mere copycats that are sucking the past dry, you can’t argue that fact. And if you look at the big picture and place them in the context of the large number of contemporaries mining the same rich seam of noise and melody, you’ll see that they come off rather well. And….if you really take a leap, you might even admit that when putting this album up against albums by some of the originators of the sound, it’s just as good if not better. It’ll be interesting to see where the band goes from here, but for right now, Colour Trip is definitely a trip worth taking.

Well there's this Daniel Romano album...

Image

See here
for more discussion if you somehow missed it. I still would argue that it's the best album of the last 10-20 years.

Anyone who likes bluegrass should check out the latest from Norman Blake

He's about as good a bluegrass artist as there is and this is probably his best album in at least 5 years or so.

Image

Garland Jeffreys - The King of In Between

should appeal to anyone who likes their reg rock with a healthy dose of soul and reggae mixed in.

Warren Zanes - I Want to Move Out in the Daylight

I'm not going to try to persuade anyone that's not already a fan but I think it would have been easy even for fans to not notice that Warren Zanes released a new album this year. It's pretty much what you'd expect from him and will be somewhere in my top 10.

A.A. Bondy - Believers

I'll back billy g up on the Daniel Romano, but I don't think those who aren't typically into retro-country would be into it.

Good songs with great guitar work and tight rhythm section. Reminds me a bit of jamband territory at parts, but with memorable songs.

I haven't really bought much in the way of music this year--a couple of crucial Amazon downloads excepted--and I still haven't gotten in the habit of illegal downloads. But there are a couple of things that have caught my attention from the legal free download circuit.

Baby Bee - Drop It Like A Bomb

Sexy, swaggering garage rock that throws back nicely. RIYL: The Eagles of Death Metal

The Everyday Film - Permanent Patients

Ok, maybe not a "legal" download, per se, but it isn't available legally anywhere... and it is artist sanctioned. There may be songs here, but they're somewhat hidden under noise and some creepy-ass narration. Oddly engaging and the perfect accompaniment to Halloween.

Josh T. Pearson - The Last of the Country Gentlemen

This is NOT Lift to Experience. Dude has obviously been through the ringer. This is basically a "my life is shit, listen" album. Several 10+ minute songs that are bare-bones acoustic guitar with some strings. Requires patience, but is rewarding.

attest. it's worth a listen.

Sandro Perri "Impossible Spaces"

I've mentioned it a few times, and don't think there's been much discussion of it other than Polly Six throwing his name (re: Polmo Polpo) out there a year or so ago – still always ahead of the curve, Alex.

Top 5 material for me, and I think it was actually BNM'd a while back, for what it's worth. Truly a patient and masterfully crafted record. Two songs in particular are centerpieces: opener "Changes", and "Wolfman", with vibrant and smooth, soulful songfulness defining this record entirely. Shorter movements with latin, electronic and ambient elements interspersed give the record a suite sentiment all throughout. Hard work for me to describe this. Fully worth multiple daily listens IYL Toro Y Moi, Caribou, awesome Constellation bands?

Graveyard - Hisingin Blues

Take a dash of Zeppelin, a pinch of Maiden, and add a side of Thin Lizzy. Retro hard rock from Sweden that sounds pretty tasty. Just recently discovered this.

Dirty Beaches Badlands

Sounds like 50s inspired surf/rockabilly that you're catching from weak AM radio station signal. Great for driving around late at night.

I've talked this up already, but I don't know if any of you actually checked it out, because there seems to be no talk-back.
Anyway, this one is worth checking out for any power pop fans.
Catchy songs -- check.
Crunchy guitars -- check.
Produced by Matthew Sweet -- check.

This is the kind of record that they should have kept making after All Over the Place, but didn't because the record company convinced them (apparently correctly), that the way to make hit records was with outside writers and just being pretty in videos.

Good thing that the band remembered that they knew how to write their own catchy songs. (And that they knew how to pick cool, interesting covers on their own.)

And this is a live version of one of those great covers that they recorded for the album:

Really chilled out, relaxed trip-hop/electronica. RIYL the more chilled out Massive Attack stuff.

I've got a lot of stuff from this year I'm really digging, but I'll toss one out I've not mention before by some local St. Louis boys from the South Side.

Image
Pokey LaFarge & the South Side Three: Middle of Everywhere

This one's a retro Americana affair that more or less mixes up some midwestern country blues with western swing and jug band music. They mine the past but definitely have their own voice and style. The whole crew are excellent musicians and the songs flow nicely. They got enough attention for Jack White to produce a single for them earlier this year. And if they ever come to your neck of the woods, you should check them out as they pout on an even better show live than on record. Buy 'em a drink while you're at it, they're all good guys.

the second constellation record i'll recommend in this thread:

Image

Esmerine "La Lechuza"

Featuring members of Godspeed and A Silver Mt Zion, Esmerine creates comparatively spacious, rather than bombastic, instrumental music, with marimba and cello in the forefront. This album, above their previous work, is more dynamic and less patterned or minimal in structure. Song structures integrate seamlessly into their unique sounds, with vocal contributions from (and all recording by) Patrick Watson on 3 songs, the best of which is "Snow Day for Lhasa", the essence of the tribute to Lhasa de Sela that spans the whole album. RIYL: your favourite Constellation bands.

I'm sure this is on my list, but I don't know if I've praised it enough on here.

Image

Fishboy - Classic Creeps

RIYL: Classic Elephant 6, They Might Be Giants, bands that create an EPIC POP album that tells a story, and then make a comic strip to go with it.

You can hear/read it all here: http://classiccreeps.com/

If you want just a taste:

Whearas on past releases, he was on a Motown kick... putting a modern spin on the modern Hitsville sound, on this release he's got more of a Sly & The Family Stone kick.
Still an utterly contemporary-sounding album, but touches on the classic Sly sound in all the best possible ways.

Goldmund - All Will Prosper (Western Vinyl)

Image

This is a collection of Civil War-era folk songs played by Keith Kenniff (Goldmund). Quite touching and beautiful.

Recorded over a period of 5 years in various houses in Massachusetts, Oregon, and North Carolina, Kenniff's arrangements feel fresh and intimate, while retaining the wistful charms and timeless appeal of the originals. In part the album's intimacy is created by his recording technique. With the top of the piano left completely open, microphones were placed close enough to capture the mechanical movement of the keys being pressed and the pedals squeaking. Similarly the acoustic guitar is close-mic'd, tracing the sounds of his fingers scraping and plucking the metal strings. The result creates a rich, almost hyper-real environment, where the tiniest details are magnified and brought to the surface.

Lots of Sly AND some Stevie Wonder, too.
