So.....I am getting married in a couple months  I was pushing pretty hard for a band, specifically these guys ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW0WxPeHcjI ), one of my favorite local acts to see. BUT, it is weighing down the budget like an anchor, and I finally had to let it go. We are now onto a DJ, usual thing (tell him what we like, he will play it). Before I go too far into building a playlist, I was wondering if anyone had a good one built they wouldn't mind sharing. I would surely appreciate it. The wife-to-be wants new dance/hip hop music, while I am more of a motown / funk / soul lover, so we will probably meet in the middle somewhat.

Thanks :rockbanana:

I'm currently in the same boat. I've been looking at bands but it's so damn difficult wading through the thousands of them and any worth their salt cost enough to cover our entire honeymoon.

Not sure how people ultimately decide on wedding bands.

Congratulations!
We had a DJ, too. They played a lot of Motown stuff, which always seems to go over well with just about everyone.
But, as you said that your wife-to-be prefers the dance/soul/hip-hop stuff, just inform your DJ of your tastes, and then let the music flow as the evening dictates. Ultimately, it's not a musical event, but a freaking PARTY, and folks are gonna have fun. Any decent DJ will be able to kinda just go with the flow and see what people in the room are feeling at the time.

Suggestion:
make a list of a few songs that each of you DO want and DON'T want played — just a few each — and let 'em take it from there.
And have fun.

Not many, though we did manage to pull it off. I thought it went really well, too, but Bloor can correct me if I'm wrong. The way we found them, in short:

Step 1: Cast A Big Net, Catch A Lot Of Shitfish. In our case it was 2004 so there weren't really websites for local bands and youtube and shit, but we found some service that, like, sent you a CD with tracks recorded by a bunch of "wedding" bands. They all sucked.

Step 2: Ask Around, Go See Some People. I forget how we heard about them, but the band we went with was playing at a huge bowling alley near Milwaukee, and we drove an hour out there one night to see them. They were covering Guster and Cheap Trick and something else as we were walking in, and then they played some originals that I really liked. We chatted them up at halftime, and they were in. I wanna say it was a coupla thousand bucks. They let us play on their instruments towards the end of the reception (3 songs I think?), they were really cool, learned a few requests ahead of time, and Busty still plays shows with the lead singer (band broke up a few years later.)

I guess if there were some band playing a smallish venue with good songs and some covers, you could probably talk them into being a wedding band for you. Could work out badly, though.

As for the playlist, we made cd's (again, 2004). I got nothing. Sorry.

And Derris whatever you want from us (me, busty I assume, whoever) I am sure we'll gladly do. You know that. I can fly with an electric on my back and the mesa pedal in my carry-on.

Thanks guys. Maybe we (wifetobe and I) will each put in 10 songs we would want, and 5 we don't want. If the DJ is worth his salt than he can handle it from there.

i just gave in to peer pressure and let the fucking dj play his wide variety of shit. the guests enjoyed it. i was too busy and drunk to notice or really care. i picked out the song we danced to (Closer by NIN) and that's about it.

I remember in my head planning to pick every song that was going to be played at the wedding. As the date drew nearer, I realized this was f'n ridiculous. Eventually, we picked about 8-10 songs we wanted played during dinner time. And we picked out a few songs to be played at the key moments (cake cutting, first dance, entrance). Beyond that, we just suggested bands we wanted to hear the most. Ended up being a lot of Queen, Bowie, Springsteen, Stones, etc.

My wedding band was awesome. Local swamp pop legends, The Boogie Kings http://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-boogie-kings-p26217.

Bingo. I bought an ipod, loaded it with songs we liked, rented a PA, and had it queued up at specific points. Plus side, we didn't have to get the music to the DJ and I got to keep the ipod for our honeymoon trip.
