I also thought the movie was really good. It was one of the best I have seen and I have an inherent distaste for animated movies. I did see a preview for Star Wars III though and although I have been horrified at the previous two, this one piqued my interest. It looks all battly and stuff. woot woot.

Why is this movie rated PG (as opposed to G)? The site says "action violence" but what does that mean?

Put another way, is this film fine for a five-year-old to see?

I saw it last Sunday and thought it was good. If you're tired of seeing arthouse indie flicks and want some light hearted popcorn entertainment it's perfect.

Stone, I think "action violence" means things blowing up. There is no explicit violence but the characters do get in fights and cartoonishly thrown against walls and the like. The enemies ships do get blown out of the sky. I don't think a five year old would distinguish that "oh that bad guy ship blew up but what about the man inside?".

Then again I don't have kids and can barely dress and feed myself.

this movie was so fun to watch. it was funny and the animation was really good and it had adult-type jokes that made it great. it played with super-hero cliches and it yay yay yay! buy me junior mints!

I'm pretty sure that the movie was fine for young kids. Anything that might be questionable was subtle, and they probably wouldn't get it.

There are some Looney Tunes-level bits of cartoon violence that aren't at all graphic, but parents with problems with general cartoon violence might object. There are some short comic scenes where death is implied but not explicitly shown.

i saw it yesterday. there were two young children behind me, probably 3 or 4 that were howling hysterically throughout the whole movie. the only problem i can think of is that it's maybe too long for little kids. the kids behind me, between their laughing, were getting restless. (it's 110 minutes with a short cartoon before. factor in previews and that's a long time for a kid to sit still.)

i liked it a lot. i was picking out james bond references all over. and the action scenes on the island were straight from return of the jedi. it was nice to hear sarah vowell's voice coming from a body more appropriate for her voice. yeah, good times.

Yeah, my son will see that one too (especially since he's obsessed with trains), and knows of the Polar Express thanks to a local ice cream shop that has a model of the train there (the guy who wrote the book was born and raised in the Grand Rapids area IIRC). Maybe his mom can take him to that movie. Also, there's this, which I'm sure we'll see too.

Oh, and thanks for the info on The Incredibles, everyone. I think we'll go see it this weekend.

i guess that i'm most likely not the target audience for this sort of thing, as while i think that this is probably the best example of how to do a big budget, spectacular hollywood movie the right way, i thought that it was TOO family oriented for me to really get into it. i liked it an all, but maybe my expectations were too high. i didn't really see all the subtle adult humor that i'd heard about, although i was pretty tired and could have been in the wrong mood. i can see where things like the self-afirming short in the beginning and the constant battery of respect yourself, you're special messages would make a parent feel like it was an appropriate movie for their children (it probably is); as what is legally an adult i found it a bit heavy-handed and deliberate in ways that i think the Shrek movies, and even the toy story and monster's inc movies managed to avoid.

Also, my main "gripe" about this movie-going experience was, as often, the previews. first were 5 or 6 ads for something called Bigg's Adventure, which looks to be about a new line of Bigfoot toys at Burger King. Subsequently ads for new toys based upon Dumbo in Poohland and, inexplicably, computer animated cars made me feel really dirty. the last straw was Son of the Mask, which looks to be the scarriest movie of the year as jamie kennedy's career shrieks its death wail. the whole thing left me confused as to what i'm supposed to buy.
