This is newly remastered, so thought I'd bring it up.

Anyone rate this album highly? I enjoy it quite a bit. I remember this older punk girl in my neighborhood gave it to me to listen when I was maybe 9-10, and I loved it because it reminded me of her, and, I thought she was totally bad ass. Problems and Pretty Vacant are still damn good punk rock tunes.

This release has used the original master tapes from the 1977 recording sessions thought to be lost for many years. Now thankfully rediscovered, the tapes have been remastered, for the very first time, by Tim Young under direction from original producer Chris Thomas.

I love this record. Not a bad song on there.
My only question is regarding the remastering; it seems kinda pointless.

This is an album that, like any of the early GBV albums, sounds best when it sounds bad. The original album sounded dirty, gritty, muffled and... dangerous.
I can't imagine that the improvements in sound would make for anything close to an improvement in the album, itself.

I always like the Professionals album more than this one.

"Holidays in the Sun" is in my all-time top 10. Johnny Rottenlydon's vocal performance (not sure if I'd actually call it singing) still amazes me 30-some years later.

About half this album is awesome, and the other half is pretty good, too.

But if we're talking about stuff we like more in a somewhat-related vein, I'll take the first two PiL albums, the first Damned album, the first Clash album, and the first three Ramones albums over this.

Hasn't lost any of its greatness, if you ask me. It's a great, snotty, rocking set of songs.

Any idea what they were trying to accomplish in remastering it (soundwise, that is)?

This was mastered for CD back in, what, 1990? I would guess there could just be a more faithful digital transfer with newer technology, in theory. Although I think my CD sounds fine, plenty loud but not harsh or compressed-sounding.

One of the albums that laid the foundation for the music I like today. Wore out the tape in 6th grade.

My theory on this album is that it's one of those albums that people think is good but not perfect. And then everyone names what their favorite song is and then all the songs end up being mentioned. Mine is "No Feelings."

certainly not every remaster is a good thing, and I haven't heard this.

But sometimes a remaster is to get it to sound more like it did on vinyl, and not just louder and more modern.

I'll still drag out my old beaten up vinyl copy and won't likely bother with the remaster but it is one of the all time greatest albums in my life. When I first heard this as a pretty young kid it instantly changed the way I listened to music. I hadn't heard the New York scene stuff, stuck on my small town midwest island at the time, but this one got through one summer and I fell instantly under it's spell. I was a pissed off kid and this thing just felt so damn right. This album was the foundation for a ridiculous amount of what else I listened to for years and years.

I like the opening riff better than almost anything on the album.

If we're going for "favorite song not Anarchy or God Save The Queen" I'm going No Feelings.

One of the few albums that actually changed society, I guess 'Sgt. Peppers' is the other one that springs to mind.

There are a couple of tracks that I think are noticeably poorer than the rest (Liar, Seventeen) but most of it is great and I don't think it's lost anything, it still sounds exciting, dangerous and rock n' roll to me.

The singles are the best tracks but I've always been partial to 'New York'.
