wanted to drop in and say hi to Obner as it has been a long, long time. so what better way to say hi again than a poll? i do a bunch of music poll these days, can’t wait for Halloween for my next big project, it has to do with the Acclaimed web site and the 80’s. anyways, i inspired a thread today and thought it would be a good poll here as well. For some reason it got me thinking of Obner as well. so i’m posting the poll exactly the same here as it was posted elsewhere.

Quote:
Intrigued by BeeOK's statement on the Grizzly Bear thread that he'd buy the album after reading Nitsuh's article in NYmag about indie finances, and that it'd be the first CD he'd bought this year. Maybe BeeOK's bought loads of vinyl, I don't know, I suspect not though (otherwise why not say you'd buy the Grizzly Bear album on LP), but it surprised me: BeeOK is obviously a big music fan otherwise they wouldn't be on here, and I'd kind of assumed that ILMers were amongst the last bastion of people still buying music physically (I'm very aware of how many people here are now digital converts).

So, how much physical music, on whatever format, have you bought this year? I'm interested in how much digital music you've purchased to, but for the sake of sanity I'll limit poll options just to physical purchases; so feel free to talk about digital too, though in your posts.

anyways, i was inspired and went out and bought eight albums today, five from 2012 and three from 2011. far cry from the Top 30 plus i bought just a few years back.

btw, that thread here (just to prove it does exist and also has over 300 posts): http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelected ... adid=93891

I've bought no physical music for the past two years maybe, but I've been living in Australia and Korea for the past two years or so, and am planning to return to America in about 10 months. When everything you buy has to be able to fit in two suitcases digital is really the only way to go. I'll probably go back to about a 50-50 mix of physical and digital once I return back to America though.

I've bought about as much as I ever do - maybe 8 CDs. I'll probably get another 6-8 by the end of the year. I still love having the physical CD packaging in my hand, and filing it away on the shelf once I've ripped it to the PC. Truthfully, though, it feels more and more like an antiquated routine; once it's filed away, I almost never look at it again.

If you count used records at thrift stores and the like, I'm easily over a hundred pieces. I've also bought probably in the 40-50 range of new music on vinyl or cassette. This year and the tail end of last has actually been kind of my return to buying most of the music I hear and I have moved to only downloading on a rare occasion and then usually just to get a listen to something I really want to hear before buying. It's been both because of just being opposed to the whole all music is free thing that I find problematic and also as a limiter to how much stuff I have to sort through. When I have to shell out cash I make a more careful decision about what I wanna listen to and I tend to get more involved in a smaller number of offerings instead of getting flooded with more than I could ever listen to when I get too into downloading. It's too easy to download 12 records a day and not listen all that closely to any but a few of them.

I think my next step in cutting back to something manageable is to give myself a limit of maybe 3-4 pieces of music a month or one a week and that's it. As much as that seems a cut back with how much is available these days, with my current record library already providing plenty to listen to, having one new record a week to is plenty and let's be honest, if I select well it's not like there are more than 50 great records coming out each year that I am missing out on anything I just have to have.

Bee - the official purchase thread is stickied at the top of this forum. it lists both the quantity and the quality of our purchases!

i will add that Spotify has cut down my purchases quite a bit, and i'm perfectly fine with that. i would rather spend my loot on limited editions, remasters, cool packaging, and just spotify any other releases that i'm just kinda into.

I don't wanna say, but it's way too many.

A little less than half my purchases are physical, but it's still a whole lot. Next year I'm going to have to buy way, way less. Way less. Two kids = no more music budget.

I don't believe I have bought or downloaded album in over a year. I've seen a few shows, but most of my disposable income goes to home brewing these days.
I don't really feel the need to buy much, when I can log into my spotify account and listen to the same music.

With my changed living situation, all my CD's are not in plastic storage bins in my basement, awaiting my next living situation where I may be able to display them. So with that, I am starting to accept the idea of not needing the physical product anymore, as they only get ripped to itunes, and then sent to get moldy in the basement....I still have purchased around 50-60 physical items in 2012 though, which is probably 50% less than the last decade or so....

Itunes match & cloud is great...Having my whole collection available....I'll never give up the love of having physical product and I hope to one day have a wall to display it again...

About 6-8 years ago I stopped downloading music. I like the tactile pleasure, the spatial reality of finding the music, the color and graphic presentation of the packaging, the ritual of pulling the music out of a sleeve and putting it in, slowly, and pushing in carefully.

And the convenience of "click, click" and you've bought something. And there' s the cardboard in your home in a few days as you get home after twelve hours of work and see the packages, open them, and reflect " what the fuck is this, I don't remember ordering this.". And it waits to be opened (though I do hate the plastic wrap), perhaps in a day, more, sometimes a week, just sitting there in the "new" stack... Organizing digital files just doesn't satisfy the Epicurean in me.

I download tons, then only purchase albums I absolutely love, or albums by artists whom am I dedicated fan of.

Most new things I buy electronic versions only...unless I can get a cheap used CD. I've also picked up a few used cd's off Amazon/local used bins. I'd guess 60.

This. Except I still download and buy online as well.

I've picked up over 30 or so physical records or cd's. I enjoy the ritual and the impulse buys. Hearing something over the loud speaker in store. Chatting up the employee or owner about what they're listening to. I mean, these are people who listen to music all day. In most cases it's their livelihood and people don't take advantage that most LOVE to talk music.

Digital has made everything easier and more transportable but as a medium, I hate it. Just feels so much more disposable.

On a related note - packaging on the new Flying Lotus is beautiful. Totally worth buying just for that.

The music is good enough. Not sure why a 46 min album needed to be split into 2 LPs and then go for $25 (seems to be an increasingly common practice lately). I bought the CD.

I've determined that I have purchased 5 CDs, which made me realize I haven't updated the 2012 Purchase Thread in a while.

Looks like I've bought 52 according to my database on RYM. I know that I bought a few things that weren't in their database though and I was too lazy to add them so probably just under 60. Alot of $ that would have been in my music budget in the past has been reallocated to wine & bourbon these past few years. I rarely download though and most of what I do download is either because I can't find a non-import copy (Peter Bruntnell) or just on a whim and I listen to it maybe once or twice and forget about it or buy it after that.

Zero.

I've moved house twice in the past year, and the process made me loathe the fact I'd collected so much vinyl and CD detritus. From this point on, it's download only - and if I like an album/band enough I'll pay for an official download, go to their show, and maybe buy some merch.

In the meantime, I've got a bunch of shit to sell.

I've probably bought about 30-40 CDs this year, but all have been used, and most have been in the $1-$3 range. Kind of wish I hadn't because now I have to deal with them space wise. Definitely won't be keeping all of them either.

Last year I maybe bought about 10-15.

I really only but physical media—both music and movies/TV shows. I'll download every now and then, but generally, as a rule, I don't.
