My advice is don't troll the natives over the Elgin Marbles, especially, if in doing so, you bring up Second World War history.

see, my plan is to run the classic route from Marathon to Athens during the annual marathon event they have there in november

but that's one day, so it would be cool to spend the rest of a week or so lounging about on some sunny beach, eating spinakopita and grape leaves, thinkin philosophy an' all that

lol...Greece has no shortage of gypsies, stray dogs, and Golden Dawn followers.

In any case, my suggestion would be this...I wouldn't stay in Athens for more than a day or two. If you can afford it, I'd spend the rest of your time on the Greek isles. Mykonos and Santorini are obviously the most popular destinations and can be quite expensive. However, I would look into other islands like Naxos, Paros, and Folegrandos. Or islands like Chios and Lesvos which are typically more popular with the European tourists. All the islands I've suggested have great beaches and are ideal for sightseeing - local villages, monasteries, fortresses, etc.

If you're looking for a bit cheaper options, opt for the little islands off the coast of Athens. They're only a ferry boat ride away like Aegina.

I looked online for you and I found that this site has the best advice for tourists on which island is best for you:

I liked Crete, Thessaloniki, and of course Santorini. I didn't like Athens, but of course the Parthenon itself was incredible.

Santorini is one of my favorite places I've ever been. If you go make sure you see the sunset, and go visit the volcano part of the island.

Santorini is also very expensive but if you're going in November, maybe you can find a good deal.

But I must warn you, you and femtoots will have the best sex you've ever had. There's just something in the air. The Greek isles are one huge boner.

I went with my university and paid a single amount for everything, so I'm not sure. I think the euro is weaker now than when I went, but when I was there the exchange rate was bad so everything seemed really expensive.

At this point shouldn't Greece be paying you to come there?
