Anybody know anything from Ghana? Any artists, in particular that I need to check out? I met a man from that country today, and we were talking music. I told him that I loved music from other African countries, but did not know anything from Ghana. He told me to check out High Life music, but that is a style and he did not give me any particular artist to check out.
Anybody got any names for me? Point me in the direction of the good stuff.

I guess it's Ghanaian?

I don't know if I'd heard any highlife before just now, but I'm finding on Youtube is not dissimilar from the Nigerian music I've heard. I guess there was some crossover between those scenes.

Anyway your best bet is probably to start with comps. I'm sure billy g has some opinions and advice on this.

That's what I was hoping for.

I mean, barring any other advice, I would probably go with this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Ghana-Special-Hig ... n+highlife
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/136 ... 1968-1981/

which seems fairly broad and appears to cover highlife along with Ghanaian Afrobeat, funk, blues, and other pop genres.

I'm not nearly as into world music as I used to be. It's been a long time since I've listened to any of the music from Africa that I own and I never went too deep into Highlife. I bought a comp on the genre I think from Rough Trade that was pretty decent, Eric Agyeman "Highlife Safari" and a couple of albums by Joe Mensah. If you're looking to buy something, a comp is probably the easiest way to go initially. E.T. Mensah (unrelated to Joe Mensah) is probably the biggest name in Highlife. You can find some of his stuff on Spotify if you want to sample. That Eric Agyemen album is on spotify too. If you've never heard Highlife, the best comparison I can make is to old school jamaican ska but a little more jammy and a little more guitar centric. You'd probably like it.

There was some Afrobeat in Ghana too. African Brothers and Ebo Taylor are two of the biggest Afrobeat artists there.

These are two good comps:

both are on spotify.
