So some of you are aware via chats on DC++, but just thought I'd put this out there for anyone else who has dogs and may be curious.

About 3 weeks ago, my husband and I took our black lab Loon to the vet to get some lumps removed. She'd had these lumps for a couple of years, and our previous vet just told us to keep an eye on them and let him know if they got bigger or changed in any way. So a month or so ago, we started seeing a new vet. He checked them out as well, and told us it wouldn't hurt to have them removed and sent to the lab for pathology. In total, we had four lumps removed-- one on her forehead, one on her right flank, one on the inside of her left leg, and one on her rear left leg under her tail. 3 of the lumps came back as non-serious. The one on her left rear came back as a mast cell tumor, which is cancerous.

The vet didn't feel qualified to give us specific treatment methods although he did talk about further excision, radiation therapy or leaving it alone. He strongly suggested we see a veterinary oncologist, which we did today. The oncologist sounded very positive when looking at the pathology results but felt like she needed to speak with the lab tech to get further details. She also gave us options to consider. The first was surgery, which would remove a bigger chunk of tissue from her backside. While it could be potentially disfiguring, she felt like her tail would cover it up for the most part, and she had had no experience with any dogs losing mobility or having problems with musculature. It would be a one-day outpatient sort of thing, with a 2 week recovery time. The second option was radiation therapy, which would require her to get treatments for 5 days a week for 3 weeks. She said that radiation treatments were very successful in keeping tumors from recurring, but my dog would have to be under anesthesia DAILY to do this. Not a selling point for me, as my dog is 9 years old. The last treatment was no treatment... kind of a "wait and see" attitude. She felt like most mast cell tumors do return without further treatment, so we didn't even consider this an option.

Anyhow, today, she had complete bloodwork done on her, as well as needle aspirates on 3 other small lumps we found. I'm not so concerned about those. We'll wait for the results of this work (hopefully tonight or tomorrow). The oncologist felt like the bloodwork will give her more insight into what's going on and she'd be able to tell if the tumor was metastisizing anywhere else in the body. So anyhow, once we get that back, we're going to go ahead with surgery. The oncologist strongly recommended this route as well, and I feel very comfortable with our decision. It's certainly not going to be cheap, but at the same time, we're willing to do whatever it takes, and she's completely healthy and high-spirited otherwise.

Part of me is still worried with all the waiting we have to do, but overall, I'm feeling very positive about our experience with the oncologist so far.

For those of you who want to learn further about mast cell tumors, here's a GREAT website. For reference, my dog was diagnosed with a Grade II mast cell tumor.

that is no fun, dana. i hope for the best for loon.

we racked up close to $10,000 in bills when seamus was really sick 3 years ago. it's scary how expensive this stuff can be, but i think we'd do it again in a heatbeat. the thing that makes me most angry is the whole thing could have been avoided if our first vet made the correct diagnosis.

good luck with everything.

Aww, Dana, I know how much you love your puppy. I hope Loon turns out okay -- she sounds like a great pooch!

Wow Dana, I didn't know anything about this, so this is a shock... I really feel for Loon. I hope that she recovers fast and successfully from her future procedure. I love Labs. So fun in and around water. My neighbors growing up had a couple... great great dogs.

I just took our dog Hazel, Wheaten Terrier, to the vet today for a check-up. Dystemper shots, Lyme Disease, etc. A couple of weeks ago Hazel was pretty sick. She ended up being on antibiotics for 2 weeks, and a diet of rice and hamburger. Of course, she loved that part of it.

Anytime Hazel gets sick or looks out of sorts, I feel really bad. It's like a young child that can't tell you what's wrong, but you know there is something.

That being said, good luck LOON! Get better SOON!

i know...but put yourself in this position:

you're at the animal hospital after your dog just burst his lung and can barely gasp for air and is looking at you helplessly. the doctor says we can hook him up to a machine that will cost $1500/day and hope that it heals. could take 3 days, could take 10. luckily it only took 3 for seamus. i don't know how i couldn't do whatever it took for him.

Hope everything turns out okay.

The way my wife and I look at it, we have no kids and aren't planning on having any. So, no new school clothes every fall, no summer camp, no car, no college tuition or any other expenses you can think of involved with having children.

Our dog is our baby and while the well is not bottomless we are pretty much willing to do whatever it takes if she's not well.

I'll second that. I'd give my kidneys to Hank if he needed them. Good luck with everything. I'll definitely keep you guys in my prayers. . .

I haven't really read this thread since I've been a little unstable since my dog passed and the littlest thing about pets suffering really upset me to the point of tears.

I'll just say that I hope that everything goes well, Dana, for you and your "family". Prayers are sent your way.

well... (big sigh)

Two of the 3 lumps we had the oncologist do needle aspirates on came back as mast cell tumors as well. The positive news is that they are very small. The negative news is that these will have to be removed via surgery as well (again, big tissue samples). We've scheduled her for an ultrasound next Wednesday to see if the cancer has spread anywhere else, so we'll know even more then.

Not the news we were hoping for, but we'll see how it goes.

Rodney, I think Zoe's positive thoughts along with everyone else's really helped Loon. We *finally* got some good news today.

Talk about a rollercoaster ride. I can only imagine how much worse it is when someone in your own family is afflicted with such a horrible thing.

After the bad news about the two additional (and one suspect) lump from last week, our oncologist suggested we bring Loon in again to do an ultrasound (to check to see if any of her organs were enlarged or otherwise affected) and x-rays. This occurred yesterday. I dropped her off in the morning, and my husband picked her up in the afternoon. (If I may digress here for a moment, I had to smile when he told me about picking her up. He checked in at the desk to say he was there, and the vet tech brought Loon out on a leash. He was standing there, but there were other people/pets around, so Loon was just kinda looking around. He looked at her and said, "Hey, baby!" and with that, she was all skates on the floor trying to reach Dad. It made me smile just because I could totally visualize it, and it also made me happy that Loon associates our voices with safety and happiness. The vet tech also told my husband that they didn't have to sedate her for any of the procedures like they do most dogs, and that further confirmed my suspicions that Loon is a real trooper!). My husband spoke with our oncologist briefly, and she told him the ultrasounds looked fine. She was going to examine the x-rays more closely and get back with us today. She also had a chance to talk with the original pathologist, and it turns out that the first tumor was actually more like a Grade 1 tumor than a Grade 2 tumor (Grade 1 is a more positive result), but she had rated it a Grade 2 because she wasn't sure how deep it went. Our oncologist felt assured by this conversation, and thought we could proceed with surgery on that area.

Well, she got back in touch with us today, and she said the x-rays looked great too. Whew! :) Loon is now scheduled next Wednesday with a pre-surgery consult, and after that, we will set a date for her surgery. She will have 4 different locations of tissue removed. At this point, we've avoided the need for chemotherapy or radiation treatments, which is a godsend.

And after that, we're hoping we're done! Thanks so much for all the concern and support you've given me over the last month or so. It's been a crazy and somewhat maddening time, and I think your positive thoughts really helped Loon this time around!
