Loogar and I have discussed this before regarding football coaches, but it just came up on the Stews regarding baseball managers (and Bobby Cox in particular)

Baseball: Is it not a little bit ree-diculous that a 65 year old man prances around in a baseball uni? I don't advocate the suit for baseball managers (see below), but there has to be some middle ground.

Football: Cut it out with the athletic gear and put on a damn suit. Bill Bellichek is a damn disgrace. Show some class.

Was Dan Reeves (Ree!) the last NFL coach to rock the suit?

I think official team Zubaz, turf shoes w/ the nubby cleats, and a mesh jersey half shirt should suffice. With or without meatball stains.

Larry Brown is a stylish man.

and keep your eyes open on the NFL network, they have an awesome 1 hour show dedicated to the history of what NFL coaches wear. it's hillarious and awesome.

Pure class.

And don't think Reee and even Bears-era Ditka didn't learn from this.

NFL films is a perfect example about how awesome something can be when you take the time and money to do it the right way.

NFL Films deserves its own appreciation thread stickied to the top of the page--music web site be damned. Greatest. Thing. Ever.

I'll look out for that special on coaches Jewels. I am a frequent flipper to the NFL Network.

Hank Stram always looked sharp on the sidelines. He never attended a game without sporting the old Arrowhead insignia on his blazer.

I'm curious what your thoughts are on Bum Phillips/Jerry Glanville/Richard Petty-style ostentatious cowboy hats on coaches. Are these acceptable?

I always liked Stram's style. One of the best of the old school.

Bum Phillips and Jerry Glanville et al reach a level of sartorial genius nonpareil.

One of the biggest mistakes the NHL ever made was not trying to copy the NFL in that regard. Would've been so much more productive than putting a team in Miami.

SuperBowl XXXII (Pack v Denver) is one of my favorites, that & anything 49ers of course.

Bum Phillips was pretty cool (I used to have him as an avatar) Glanville was a putz.

Moxie, I think like most things, it depends on the man.

Coolest coaching hats:

1.Bear Bryant
2.Tom Landry

I'm not sure what you could put a baseball manager in that would really work. I just think of it as part of the game. Slacks and a golf shirt just wouldn't work IMO.

As far as football goes, any coach still rocking these in spring practices should be publicly disgraced:

Put on some adidas or nike gym shorts fer chrissakes.

I agree on the timelessness of the 50's-70's suit coaches but today's NFL coaches usually wear something like this:

Which is fine by me. I can't think of anyone who rocks the suit in the NFL.

Coach Richt is pretty classy especially compared to Bobby Bowden or Chuck Amato.

NFL coaches HAVE to wear gear made by the NFL.

Oh, possibly a guy, who with John McGraw, was responsible for more muders than John Wayne Gacy.

I think there is a dispute b/n these guys as to who was the first one in The Hellfire Club, and which of them taught the other that a good way to make yourself feel better is to light homeless people on fire.

I once heard it explained that the reason baseball managers wear uniforms is that between baseball managers, football coaches and basketball coaches, baseball managers are the only ones that regularly have to come out on to the playing field instead of sticking to the sidelines.

Whatever.
