I just did it quick from memory so don't get on my case if I left out anyone who you feel "should" be on here.

Beat me to it. If we're talking about what they did on the show I don't think many can come close to Hartman's brilliance. He could do anything.

Spade was on the list at first but I had to cut some as it would only let me post so many options.

Phil, no contest. So much talent has crossed that stage, but Phil's ability to play so many characters so well & so funny has won me over.

my favs:
Happy Fun Ball - narration
Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer
Frankenstein
Anal-Retentive Chef
Ed Macmahon
'Sassy' Host
Super Colon Blow
the bank commercial with R. Barr

I loved Phil Hartman. His characters on the Simpsons were great. too.

Norm MacDonald was funny, but I never liked his "Weekend Updates"

Hartman. But the simpsons roles help. Ferrell is a close 2nd though. "Get OFF, the SHED! Now!! I Will Set you on FIRE!!"

I don't think he was funny so much as just stupid. What I mean is he wasn't always trying to be funny. But because of his voice and facial expressions, people thought he was somewhat funny.

Personally I think he was gar.

I'll vote Will Ferrell everytime.

Mine would be Will Ferrell just because of his great characters over the years.

But if this thread was "Favorite SNL Cast Member who rarely got a good skit but slayed in the good ones he had," it would be Tracey Murray.

hmm...interesting that it's such a man heavy list. When so many great women have crossed that stage. The original female cast and the current are the two strongest they've ever had though.

The women steal the show nowadays.

But man, Jane Curtin, she was awesome. Her and Gilda. I'm partial to the early years, so I'm torn between Gilda and Chevy.

I wondered about Tina Fey too. I met her parents recently and they cracked me up. They love to point her out. to everyone. i don't blame them.

I can't believe no one has voted for Bill Murray yet.

I ended up voting for Gilda. She invented too many crazy characters back in her day that are still friggin priceless today.

I kinda agree with Mlle, but only because I just think he's a bit overrated as funniest cast member. I thought he was great, but not as great as some others.

"Dirty Work" = criminally underrated movie... Hell, I almost didn't give it a chance. Norm MacDonald was the best update anchor ever, and his Burt Reynolds was priceless...

I'd definitely vote Bill Murray as this was an "overall" thing, as he is probably my favorite actor, but he can't beat Murphy, Carvey, Belushi or Ferrell in the "only on SNL" arena...

That being said, Carvey gets the nod as Ferrell is penalized for both the Roxbury guys and the Cheerleader sketch, and Belushi and Murphy proved that their talent was transcendent from the show and achieved success elsewhere as well... proves that Carvey was a true SNL phenom...

I am noticing this is more of a "guy" list.
I think men like Phil Hartman...I cannot stand him, or Norm MacDonald, or David Spade. Seriously won't watch some episodes with him on.

I love Gilda too. I call my doctor Roseanne Rosannadanna

the current female cast is aweomse-
Rachel Dratsch is so fucking funny, as is Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph.

and hello? Eddie Murphy is awesome too.
