So, I caught Danzig this weekend at MetalFest, and half way through his set, he does a mini Misfits set with Doyle Frankenstein.

Misfits were a band that were alwsaysd on my list to check out, but never got around to it..

Anyways, I was blown away, and want to pick up some stuff.

Question ofr those in the know?
Does the band have a collection that focus's on strictly the Danzig era Misfit years? Am I better off getting just the early records? How many did he play on before he left the band? 3?

thanks ya.

Buy all of the early records [my fav being Earth A.D.], as they're all essential punk records IMO. They have a best of series, but they don't include some amazing tracks. They have always been one of my favorite punk artists ever. They have such a raw and chaotic energy.

Also, i cannot stand anything from Danzig or Samhain for that matter.

I agree...

The solo material he performed went over decently withthe crowd, but i found to be a massive bore and i considered leaving....but the misfits stuff just had so much more energy, passion, and urgence to it....

There is a greatest hit ollection that I believe is just called "The Misfits". I t has the goofy skull on the cover.(the one that all the kids have the t-shirt of)

It is an excellent collection. About 20-25 songs. I wish I still owned it actually.

Their best studio albums (imho) are Walk Among Us and Legacy of Brutality

actually...

If you're interested in The Misfits, make this box set the LAST thing you buy. Why? So many people go on and on about its completeness, which is dead wrong. Yes, nearly every song is on here, but the best recordings of their greatest songs (Night of the Living Dead, Astro Zombies, 20 Eyes, Skulls, I Turned Into A Martian) are available on Walk Among Us and NOT on the box set.

So if you're getting into The Misfits, buy any of these before plunking down for the box set:

1) Walk Among Us (their best album)
2) Static Age (the separately released version is more complete)
3) Collection I (just to get Bullet / Horror Business / Where Eagles Dare)
4) Earth A.D.
5) 12 Hits From Hell (if you can find it / afford it)

Forget about Collection II and Legacy of Brutality. With the exception of American Nightmare, they're mostly alternate takes, bad remixes Danzig did in the 80s, or Samhain recordings being passed off as The Misfits.

The Box Set is only necessary for completist fans, and it gives people the illusion they've got the whole Misifts story when they're missing half of it if they haven't heard Walk Among Us or 12 Hits From Hell.

good points.

yeah, just get the collection discs. the second one isn't as good as the first BUT has "last caress" which is my favorite misfits song. or go nuts and get the box - which comes in an awesome coffin shaped box.

I would agree, Walk Among Us is the best. Funny on the t-shirt... kids have been wearing that t-shirt since *I* was in school, and that was a pretty long time ago, ha ha.

^^^ The Box Set is excellent. Well worth the cash if you any kind of Misfits fan (except the dorks who prefer the current version).

i have a theory that the exact same number of kids buy that t-shirt every year when they get into 7th or 8th grade.

The Misfits have to be the only band in history to sell more T-Shirts than records.

MOMMY! CAN I GO OUT AND KILL TONIGHT!?!?!

I really liked them in my middle school metal phase. I think I burned out "Walk Among Us" when I was 13. I remember it being very head-bangable.

I was a huge Misfits fan as a teenager. I collected all manner of bootlegs and 7", etc.

I'm pretty sure I own all of their recorded output in some form or another. And most in multiple formats. (Although the bulk of it is in boxes in my parents house back in MN.)

"Walk Among Us" is still my favorite of their records and the best place to start with them.

I made the mistake of not seeing Danzig when he came around a few weeks ago...Boy did I regret it...I would have given a left nut to see Danzig perform a bunch of Misfits songs with Doyle....Oh well snooze you lose I guess...I have seen the re-incarnation(Doyle, Jerry etc. w/o Danzig) of the Misfits about 3 times...That was ok..But by the 3rd time it was a little weak...

My favs are Earth A.D. followed by Walk among Us...Can't go wrong either way...
