I had AT&T. They were purchased by Cingular.

Cingular calls and says "hey, we need to switch you over. We'll send you a new Motorola phone for the trouble".

I say, "Ok".

Now, I cannot go ANYWHERE and get a clear signal. Either this phone or this company sucks dog ass.

Who has some answers for me?

Trevor

I had Cingular for a year and shagged ass back to Verizon.

Then again, I'm on the east coast, which does make a difference.

verixon has been better for me than AT&T was, except for my ugly ass phone.
I went to check and see if they has anything better to offer, but no dice.

Before the merger ATT and Cingular had the two highest rates of dissatisfaction among the major phone companies--the merging of such forces was never gonna be good, be it bad phones, lousy coverage or incredibly, incredibly shitty service. Run.

I have verizon and really haven't had many problem at all with regards to signal strength. For the most part it works as well as I would expect. Plus I just upgraded to a new phone which I must say is pretty nice indeed.

You might want to see if you can upgrade your phone's PRL (Preferred Roaming List). It's a good idea seeing as how the companies just merged - also a good idea when you're about to go on a trip. Not sure how you do it with Cingular - with verizon you can do it over the air (*228 option 2) and with SprintPCS you have to take it to a store. Hope this info helps!

Same here.
The only places i lose a signal are in elevators, in the back of costco, and in the basement of my building.
Other than that, AT+T (Cingular) has been great here in Chicago.

2 years ago I signed up for AT+T in Chicago and it blew so bad that we switched to Sprint in the 30 day trial period. It was right when they launched their GSM technology and was beyond useless. I would all the sudden lose signals, dropped phone calls, and i would not receive voicemails. So we switched to Sprint, and we paid to get out of that contract because we kept getting calls dropped and such. Since switching to AT+T, we have had great customer service and excellent reception. I couldn't even get a Sprint signal at my parents house in Cincy, and all calls would be directed to voicemail. No incoming calls came thru.

Some Chicago news channel did a 2 day survey, where they had people in a van talk on the phone all day and they would count dropped calls and lost signals and such. Sprint was the worst by far, and Verizon was the best with Cingular close behind.
But that was just in the Chicago area.

The end.

the ONLY time i've had problems with my signal was last summer at the 'gathering of the vibes' fest in mariaville, ny. i couldn't get a signal at all. but that was kind of in the middle of nowhere.....so, i really can't complain.

My personal service is via Verizon with an LG phone -- no real problems.

My business phone is via Cingular with a courtesy Motorola phone. Don't have much problems with them either.

Cingular = the worst cell phone service ever. The only place I didn't have problems with Cingular was in Washington, DC. Anywhere else the service was terrible and their "customer service" sucked. Not helpful at all. I have Verizon now and don't have any problems at all.

Moto is capable of producing fine handsets. Back in the day they were bulletproof. But then they split up their manufacturing process into 2 halves... one shop designed guts, and then the "beauty parlor" tried to wrap those guts in something attractive. It was dumb, and their market share dwindled, rightfully, while the koreans began to eat moto's lunch. Then moto got smart, and is now beginning to consider the outside of the phone from the beginning stages, which helps a lot. That Razor phone they make for cingular is selling well beyond expectations, and looks sharp. I wish they'd make something similar for cdma carriers like VZ.

Your problem is cingular. Watch the syntax in the ads, it's hi-larious. Because cingular bought at+t, they now have slightly more customers than VZ alone does. So in their ads, it's "the largest calling network," meaning more mobile-to-mobile customers available, by like a factor of 43 million to 40 million. In VZ's ads, it's "the largest wireless network," meaning the highest number of towers in the us, which is true. Even when cingular combined its towers with at+t's, they didn't outnumber vz, who spends 4.2 Billion dollars annually on the network alone. Sprint spends half that. The gap widens. But this country is friggin Huge in wireless terms, and covering everything is pain in the arse when you only get a 5 mile radius for your $1 million tower.

as one of my many hats I wear at work, I'm also responsible for our cell phones (oh joy). We're on Verizon (switched from AT&T probably 4 or more years ago). In talking with AT&T/Cingular folks lately, I've heard about bad reception, dropped calls, etc. Verizon sucks as far as customer service is concerned, but tend to be fairly reliable with coverage. My personal phone is on T-Mobile, and I couldn't be happier... never have dropped calls, get great coverage in rural areas, no problems.

As for Motorola phones, I'm not sure they're the quality they once were, but neither is Nokia in my opinion. The phones we generally purchase around here are either LG's or Samsung's.

The style and quality offerings from the phone manufacturers varies a ton fom carrier to carrier, because of the network standard diff's... cdma vs gsm vs tdma etc. T Mobile = tied w/ sprint for smallest national network. Others like Einstein or virgin just use somebody else's and pay rent. Buut, you can have a good experience w/ ANYBODY if you go where they have towers. Totally. Reverse applies as well, naturally.

I have Cingular and Moto. No problems, even in the middle of BFE.

actually Cingular has 50.4 million customers and Verizon has 43.8 million, so it might not mean the best wireless coverage, but you do have the most amount of people that you can call for free. I guess the number of people you can call is kind of irrelevant if you can't hear them...but Cingular has been good for me

I had verizon and couldn't wait for the day that my contract was over so I could jump ship and go to a different yet equally sucky provider. Reading all the reviews I could find and discovering that AT&T was the worst I went with them (no logic I know) because they had the best deal with Nationwide coverage and the best phones. I've had them for a year now and don't have any complaints. My reception was good in chicago and great in Seattle. The only time I didn't have any signal was somewhere on I-90 in Wyoming and Montana, which really wasn't a surprise.

Now if I could only get service for the phone in my car, that shit's early '90's pimp.

just a quick update:

cingular still sucks.

i have 6000 min. a month ($249/mo) and use my phone for business and personal purposes. i have had this number since i moved to austin in 1999.

i have had enough.

i just spoke with the cingular customer support person and she advised that the problem was that i "live between a good area and a bad coverage area" which means i'm not picking up all of the towers.

. . ."more bars in more places. that's our goal".

good goal. stop making commercials about it and do it.

i'm going to switch services. this is crap.

I don't understand how if you had AT+T and it was good how your service suffered after the merger with cingular. It should have gotten better since not only are you using all the AT+T cell towers, but you can use all the cingular ones too.

Where are you at again? I only remember it west somewhere...
