Anyone else here waaay too sensitive? By sensitive I mean to environmental factors, e.g. sounds, chemicals, etc.

I remember Sketchy saying something about that awhile ago, methinks.

I work in a home office and yesterday and the day before there were renovations going on here: dust, vanishes, chemicals, etc

and today it's intense house cleaning (Mr. Clean, "Fantastic", and other intense household cleaning products). I have the office window wide open but the fumes are making me high... and not in a good way.

So annoying. My friend calls me the "canary in a coalmine"
Anyone else like this?

Because of my asthma, I'm sensitive to just about anything. A change in weather, climate...stress...laughing too hard, etc.

Well, there you have it. You just answered your own question. It sucks being an asthmatic but you deal. Oh well.

How's the climate over where you live?

You thinks correctly, m'lady. Check this. If it fits, you're in good company (self, FT, Charli, mlle_xix, et al.). If not, hey you're still in good company.

My wife is an "HSP".
My oldest son has "Sensory Integration Disorder" (thankfully mild, but difficult enough to handle.)

And recently, I have been extrordinarily sensitive to loud noises, esp. in confined areas... make my mild clausterphobia SCREAM.

I can relate to both you and your bf, or whoever is living with you (if anyone).

The only thing I'm sensitive about is climate as it relates to temperature. I'm always freakin' hot and sweat real easily. If it's humid I can walk across the street and come back looking as if I went for a swim.

The biggest battle between my wife and I is what the temp is set for in our home.

i think a decade of diluting my senses with smoke and booze and spicy foos has left me completely oblivious to this stuff, with the exception of pollen, which is my kryptonite. Wait, horseshoe crabs are my kryptonite, pollen is just annoying.

Actually, over the weekend, my Mom gave me a copy of the book. It's pretty dead-on.

I just seem to be in the midst of a week that is particularly driving the point home.

Innocent cleaning products + me = nausea, headache, dizzyiness, trouble concentrating. So frustrating.

But it is cool having super-sonic hearing... and to be in good company :)

PopTodd, a friend of mine recently mentioned that rock musicians develop sensitivities to certain frequencies, partly due to wear & tear and partly to the fact that we train ourselves to listen more closely.

Back at'cha. The Survival Guide is pretty cool too. It's a different author, and his perspective complements Aron's pretty well.

Yes, she encourages people to trust themselves and think independently. Cults are very much like that.

Yup.

I'm horribly, horribly sensitive to chemicals, and when I clean I have a tendency to feel really ill for a couple days afterwards.

I'm also prone to anxiety attacks and am claustrophobic(though I'm working on that one)

One of the reasons I toned down my lifestyle and took a break from going out and such was because it was making me a basket case. I'm a much calmer, more reasonable person now since I've been taking it easy and reading books and being more domestic.

I help run a Spa in a snooty part of the city and it sucks sometimes because I'm overly sensitive to the way people say things to me or reactions.

One interesting thing though about being "highly sensitive" is the factor that I am hyper-sensitive and have been told so since I was a child. And with that my intuition is almost rock solid. Which also can make a person rather nervous in general. I can sense situations and how people feel just by walking into a room that they're in. It's creepy.

It's also led to the downfall of past relationships because I would know when something was up or wrong and didn't want to admit it or end em, it would make me nervous and then I'd push the person too far.

My son is also highly sensitive which is why I understand him best and getting others to understand him.

(todd, I didn't know this about your son. We should talk sunday night, k?)

I start to lose people when I tell them I don't have any light bulbs at home because I'm 'sensitive' to artifical light.

Instead I just use the light of my monitor and a small blue lamp with about a 3.5 watt output.

After sundown I pretty much can't find anything but at least I don't have a crippling headache.

Sounds get to me. I get irritated by the office chatter outside of my office easily, and thankfully, now have a door to shut if it becomes too much. We don't have AC at our house, so in the summertime, we pretty much have to open the windows. Window fans are great at blocking noise, but sometimes when I hear people talking as they walk past our house, or someone partying down the street, it irritates me beyond belief. We do have a band that's living in a rental house down the street from us. So far, they've been pretty courteous, and stop practicing exactly at 10 pm. With the cold weather and the windows closed, it's no biggie-- I'll be interested to see if it changes as summer rolls around. I think they're students so there may be a chance they'll be moving out by the summer anyway.

As for smells, I'm usually okay, except with really heavily alcohol-based perfumes. I usually can handle spicy scents better than floral scents as well.
