What's the deal with his new album? Anybody pick it up yet? I was tempted yesterday, but then saw that Dave Matthews guests on it and ran away like a little girl.

Picked and love it. A hell of a lot of fun, actually. You won't even know DM's on it unless you look to see where. And even then you might not really hear him anyway. I can't even think of which song he's on, actually. So there ya go.

I'm picking it up tonight. Previewed it on itunes yeterday, and was drooling...but I'm already a huge mike doughty fan. I recommend the release from earlier this year (skittish/rockity roll) as well -- some really great stuff on there.

It sounds like Soul Coughing's more serious stuff, I guess. You know, no weird samples and stuff. For some reason, "Soundtrack to Mary" keeps popping in my head as fitting in on this album, or much of El Oso, actually. There's no "Super Bon Bon"s or "Bus to Beelzebub"s, is what I'm saying.

I can never remember if its Soul Coughing or Bouncing Souls that I hate...oh yeah, it's both.

Don't go breakin' my heart, Dave. ;)

I pre-ordered the disc, but didn't pay any fancy shipping fees, so I'm thinking (hoping) it will be at the post office tomorrow.

Haven't heard this yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

i'd say not really. it could be considered on par with "janine" and "true dreams of wichita," but not even that... the vast majority of the songs on this album are mid-tempo and uppity. it has some silly, but don't expect soul coughing.

I picked it up a while ago and thought it was absolute, irredeemable, grinding, screeching shit on a stick. Immediately sold it back.

I've listened to it so many times, it can be nothing but number one on my top 20 of '05. It may not be the best album I heard, but its definitely the one I enjoyed the most. He also shot up to number two on my 'artists I've seen the most' list last year. I heart Mike.

Let it be noted that I do not like Dave Matthews, and him sounding like DM is not the reason I like it. I just noticed a similarity in the voice alone. The music is way better.

Loved Soul Coughing. Loved Skittish. Can't stand this album. Sure you can't tell that Dave Matthews actually sings on the album, but his presence can be felt. His stench permeates the album, like as if Doughty fucked him in the ass and forgot to towel off. Horrible Dave Matthews style bass and drums throughout the album, and the whole thing sounds like they conscientiously took everything about Doughty that makes him unique and polished it down. They made him bland. Or he made himself bland or whatever. Tied with Make Believe and for most disppointing album of 2005 in my book.

Just my opinion of course

DMB's bassist and drummer are a great rhythm section. So you just short-circuited your argument against this album.

If by "great" you mean talented, I guess I can't argue that. But I strongly dislike their style.
