God almighty, we watched that Primetime Live special last night on this and I had to leave the room and go to bed cause this kid made me nauseous.

He's such a friggin liar. It seems as if everything involving stories by his friends and such is scripted. He's obviously in it for the money.

I really hope people don't actually take his malarky seriously.

I do not watch this show. But I've seen pictures of the guy with long hair. I mean does that guy really think that if he wins that he's gonna have some sort of career? The only reason that chick from the first one is still around is because she white, lost wieght, and has tits. Period.

I caught a little of the ABC news before the special aired last night. They were showing clips of that dude in some studio singing or whatever. Fucking get a clue dude. You are on the fast track to NOWHERE! Kill yourself.

And as far as Paula Abdul goes...like I said before...I'd fuck. But kill yourself as well.

If having popular songs was the criteria for an artist being good I think pretty much everyone on this board would have some pretty shitty music collections.

Black Crowes rock.

this is true, but i can't stand that dude or his bands music.
the only reason i brought him up is because Bo does a very average impersonation of Chris.

[blatant music snob rant]

The thing that most upsets me about this show is the fact that people who are otherwise not really music fans watch this shit and then try to talk to me about it because I'm musician/"music-fan".

As if the trials and tribulations of these people singing covers of 80s hair-rock ballads is analogous to being a singer in a band that writes original material.... and as if the times when one of those chumps happens to make it through another kareoke session without slipping off-key is some great artistic and cultural achievement.

Everytime I catch a glimpse of that show or someone (read: my Mom) mentions it to me I get this overwhelming impulse to run to Cubase and work on songs till 4 in the morning.

if i may defend the contestants...

obviously, american idol is a depressing disaster. blaming the contestants and directing vitriole toward them is retarded though. also, to say that they are unable to sing well is not entirely true. the arrangements they have to sing are brutal. the environment they are singing in is brutal. however, some of them can sing, there's no denying it. some are good performers if you are into that kind of thing. i say it's as legit a way as any of finding talent in that area, which obviously none of the people on this board care about.

regarding the paula abdul thing, i can't figure out why abc would devote an hour to something so banal and present it as a scandal of some kind.

don't they pick the songs? i have heard nothing remarkable from any of pcontestants that i heard sing the other night. granted, that was 10 minutes of one show and i'm sure the had other nights where they sounded better, but let's not shit ourselves into thinking these people have star potential in any way. this is overglorified, overhyped kareoke.

Several contestants have made mention of choosing from a list, so i'm guessing they have a very specific set of songs from which they can choose.

I don't watch this show, but fuck the contestants. Let them start hauling gear, finding shows, pushing merchandise, traveling in a van with no AC, playing empty clubs and eating frozen pizzas on the road and then maybe they can get an ounce of credibility.

It's taking the easy road out on "talent" that is fueled by the "everyone is special" mentality. These people deserve the embarrassment and fucked up recording contracts.

My point was more like saying it's annoying when you're a wine taster and you get people talking to you about Bud as if it were wine.

There's nothing wrong with it in itself. I actually watch it sometimes. It's just weird when people forget that it's an extremely constrained and culturally vaccous facsimile of music. It's a world unto itself and does not really relate much to the rest of the world of music and musicians. It just has so much exposure and takes it's self so seriously that it's as if it's convinced viewers that that's what the music business is actually like.

It's like somewhere along the way someone has handed out a menu from McDonalds and people are critiquing it relative to itself. Like: "Oh, that iceburg lettus salad is a real step above the cheeseburger."

they don't care about credibility. they are living side by side with us in an alternate universe.

lastly, i can't believe i am sticking up for these dudes, but...

i watch american idol and i have to say that i don't consider what they are doing to be easy. glorified karaoke, sure, but let's see you rock some karaoke for several million viewers. i am not about to do that.
