The first one recently cracked my top 15 all time. Yeah, it's just that good.

Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace is an AMAZING song. I really wanna hear the original....

Yeh, that was an amazing run. A spiked crotchmallet to anyone who says Dream Police or anything after was as good.

It gets better with every listen. For about 3 weeks earlier this year, it's literally the only record I listened to.

part of it is that their first record REALLY shows how much early KISS influenced them (they were on tour with KISS for 2+ tours)

The 1997 s/t WAS actually pretty good.
Not all of it, but enough for me to say, at the time that CT were BACK!
Then they released The Special One.

Oh well.
They do still have it in them, I think. They just need to trust ther own songwriting again and not try to sound like anybody but they own bad selves.

That's all I own too, I love playing them back to back to back. It's hard to top a run like that, even the album covers are great. I actually haven't heard all of Budokan since I was about 12, I wouldn't mind hearing it again soon.

How would everyone rank the first three?

I personally like:

Heaven Tonight
Cheap Trick
In Color

The version of In Color they re-recorded with Steve Albini around 1998 is worth hearing, too. Rawer.

I really with I could've seen the "1st 3 Albums" shows they did in Chicago around the same time...I've got pro-recorded CD's of the songs, but it's not the same.

And I know I'm in the minority, but I thought Special One was pretty good. You could make a KILLER mix from tracks from that album, the 1997 Red Ant record, & "Woke Up With A Monster" .

Dream Police is a fine album, but yeah, the first three are why Cheap Trick will never be hated in this house.

I really really like "One On One". Maybe not as good, but an excellent record nonetheless. Kicks the crap out of "Dream Police".

It's even better than that. My #3 of all time.

Probably my favorite song on the album, narrowly edging out the most mongerous song ever recorded, "Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School."
