I was totally going to post this. Haq and I are discussing as I type on ichat.

I guess Woodstein could wave their "We'll reveal the identity when he's dead" maxim, or a reporter could do some shoe leather work (rare, but it still allegedly happens) and verify that this guy was in a position to be where Deep Throat was and know what Deep Throat knew.

I kinda hope its just a the rantings of a 91 y/o crank, just cos I think this whole thingis awesome.

Proves the truth: "3 people can keep a secret if 2 are dead"

I thought that this thread was going to be about a flash game that involved Anna Nicole Smith.

i'm kind of with ayah on this one. it would be a great diversion for them to say it was this guy and really have the actual one hidden in secrecy forever. it could be him though, i suppose.

it's funny, i've been waiting a long time to see this kind of a link online and i really thought i'd be more excited to find out than i am.

To the doubters:

Here's an interesting article from The Atlantic that speculates why Felt would be a prime candidate for the individual known as Deep Throat. It also dispels the theory of Deep Throat being a composite character.

The kicker? It was written in 1992 by James Mann, a former Post reporter who worked with Bob Woodward in the early 1970s.

And I guess its true. Next up: who shot Kennedy? or at least who bumped Ted off that bridge?

Well, it's not as if Felt's name had not been brought up as a possibility. I think everyone was hoping it would be someone more high profile like Kissinger or Buchanan, although, even I knew it wasn't those two.

I was thinkin' Pat Nixon.

Anybody else catch Pat Buchanan blasting (nay, lambasting) Felt on "Today" this morning?

Well, that brings up the question of whether Felt is a hero. What were his motivations? Why did he go about things the way he did? Did he do it just because he was passed over for the FBI #1 slot?

I saw him on Hardball last nite. You gotta remember that Pat thought and still thinks that what Nixon was doing was RIGHT.

Partially, but also to protect the tradition and independence of the Bureau.

Like most things, he ain't a hero nor a goat as far as I can tell.

Well, here's the link to the actual Vanity Fair article. It doesn't give any definitive evidence, but it's still good reading.

The article made me really sad. I got the impression that his family pressured him into it so they could make a profit.
