The workers that are employeed at the factory where I work were leaving after their shift yesterday as I was coming back from lunch. I'm watching all of these people walk out of the building to their cars and I started noticing that not ONE decent looking person was in the entire bunch. I mean I'm talking about like 50 people at least were walking out of this building. NONE of them were even remotely attractive in the least. Some were overwieght, some had terrible skin, some had grills that were just fucked up. But most were just flat out UGLY.

How is that possible? I mean I am by no means a hot dude or whatever. But come on! I had no idea that there were statistics like that in the world. I mean, give me one good looking girl, OR DUDE for that matter. I've got no problem saying out loud when a dude is good looking. I've even used the expression "hot' when referring to a guy before, I ain't scared.

Anyway, I had this thought as I was looking these people over and then walked into the office portion of the building, where I work, where there are SEVERAL really good looking people:

Are most ugly people destined to have bad lives? I thought I heard results of a study once that said that usually good looking people go further in life, whatever that means. I mean, are good looking people more successful on the hole? Or am I just imagining this?

I don't know, you may have a point there. I think there are lots of people are who attractive, but *they* don't know it, so they don't always look their best. Maybe if you're not given a lot of postive reinforcement as a kid, you tend not to think highly of yourself and therefore it shows in your expression and demeanor.

Last Friday, I was out to happy hour with some co-workers and around 5:15 I said, "We need to leave. All the ugly people are showing up." Now keep in mind the bar we were at was one of those chain places where unimaginative people go anyway (we went because it's close to work and we were on a time schedule limit), but damn if all the folks that started walking in were wearing ill-fitting clothes, with sour looks on their faces, and most (esp. the women) trying to look 15 years younger than they were, and not successfully. A lot of icky guys trolling the goods too.... gross.

this is something i've thought about too, but the other way around. there's a guy who used to maintenance at the train station near my apartment. he's an older gentleman, but i'd probably consider him to be even handsome. and i wondered how he ended up with such a job. maybe he did a stint in jail and couldn't work up the ladder.

if you want to find all the ugly people in your area go to Kmart. they shop there. you will not find one non-ugly in the entire store. walmart has it's fair share of uglies, but you'll stumble upon a few beauts. Not Kmart.

Sadly, being that I work in a spa, I see many very attractive people here, and there are quite a few of them that have the WORST and I mean the WORST attitudes and personalities that they instantly become ugly in my eyes.

Then of course there are some people who come in for treatments that I have a hard time looking in the eye. And I can usually find something attractive in EVERYONE. But man, no, some people, you just can't.

Not true.

We stumbled into one over a year ago because there was no Target in the area and we wanted to buy charlie some puzzles and it was close.

There were some ok and attractive people there. Including us.

I actually tend to think the reverse of what you said about WalMart. The one I knew of in the burbs was really close to the white trash neighborhood so they all shopped there.

I think you are witnessing a couple dynamics at work.

First of all, you are correct, better looking people have easier lives. Sorry, but its true. They have done the research. People tyend to give attractive people the benefit of the doubt more often, they assume they are more intelligent and just generally like being around them. It's not 100%, but its a general rule, kind of the way tall men get more respect and more promotions as a group. If anyone doubts the power of attractiveness in our society, you're not paying attention. Christ, if someone is goodlooking enough, we just fork over money so the rest of us can look at them, models and the like.

Secondly, poor people have generally a worse go of making the best of what they do have. The folks with the better jobs and more money, which statistically reflects the socio-economic statuys of their parents and upbringing in more cases than not, have always had good health care, braces, a dermatologist, a good diet and all that sort of thing that aids in maintaining attractiveness. Now, they go to the Gym, still eat healthy, have their hair cut well, can afford better food and clothes, the women can afford high dollar make up, they all tend to be less disgruntled and hard looking, etc...

So, yeah, if you work with a bunch of working class people and then go hang with the white collar crowd, but both the resaons listed, you will indeed see a rather dramatic difference in how these two groups look. It is a very real phenomena.

To put a personal note on it, when I started college at age 25 after living on the same block without a car for the last 3 years, and not encountering pretty much anybody of higher than a working class economic background since last seeing those types in high school, I was extremely struck by how bright and shiny everyone looked on campus.

Yeah, but I've seen plenty of people who no matter how high the dollar they've paid for their clothes or their hair etc, they're still unattractive.

Yes some of it may inhance people who are already attractive in some way. But money can also cheapen those otherwise.

Oh, and I know plenty of people with no money, or little that is, working class schlubs who are really damn fine looking.

Yes, there are always exceptions, but in generalities I stand behind what I said. Also, the gap wodens as people get older.

Absolutely true and it works both ways. I was at a wedding last weekend and when I met the bride years ago I thought she was not at all attractive. However, she has such a wonderful, engaging personality that over time she has actually become good looking to me.

It's just really funny to me that whenever this sort of topic comes up, people all rush to talk about how much they overcome outward appearences and how they find less beautiful people sattractive and are turned off by beautiful people with bad personalities. Yet, the empirical evidence from any study ever done points to those saying such things as either exceptions or liars. Hell, they've even done research to shoe parents treat attractive babies and children better than unattractive ones. It's shitty and unfortunate, but it is the way humans act and the way the world works.

yeah, i just finished reading the pecking order: which siblings succeed and why and that bit about attractive children being favored was brought up. it wasn't really dealt with, but definitely mentioned.

Oh man I was at the bar across the street with some co-workers tonight and this one dude I work with semi-invited some "girls" he knew from his mail route over to hang out with us. One looked like one of our supervisors but 30 years earlier and the other one looked like Image cross-breeded with a female.

I see some of the ugliest, and some of the most attractive people on the Metro (DC area subway).

Sometimes, I'm one of them.
