Seriously, I have no idea. I've heard Three seperate people cover "Whiskey In A Jar" lately and while it doesn't necessarily rock it reminded me that a lot of people are nuts about this band. I mix them up with Molly Hatchet all the time, who I also know nothing about. Could someone recommend a few songs (not EVERY song, not 35 b-sides, just stuff to give me an idea of what they sound like.

Not anymore, but yeah, they did. They are *not* Molly Hatchet.

I would start with "Fighting" or "Jailbreak".

FT can tell you a bit more but I own "Jailbreak" and love it.

It's one of the better mainstream "seventies" hard rock records IMO.

It ventures into arena rock territory but so what. It's got some monster riffs and fantastic guitar interplay between the two lead guitar players.

The songs Jailbreak, Boys are Back in Town, Cowboy Song, Running back to you, Angel from the Coast are all solid seventies rock.

Best listened to over massive consumption of alchohol. Preferably cheap Miller or Bud products.

Yeah, they rock.

I addition to those already suggested, try:

"Cowboy Song"

and

"Bad Reputation"

Just a great, straight-up ROCK band. 3-guitar harmonies make 'em special.

Great calls, Derris.

This should be posted in the "4th of July weekend plans" thread

"The Cowboy Song" and "The Boys Are Back in Town" from "Jailbreak" are essential TL

I saw Thin Lizzy open for Queen sometime in the late '70's (it's all a bit blurry now) Phil Lynott had a great stage prescence. It was a great loss to the rock music world when he died at 34 in a car crash.

that "Cowboy song" y'all speak of isn't the one that Blur recorded like 10 years ago for that shitty movie, is it?

Edit: no.

I'll also add that the second solo on "Cowboy Song" is one of my favorite solos ever and I don't really pay attention to that kind of stuff much.

Something about how it goes from the muted bass/speak sing breakdown into face melter solo over the monster power chords just kicks so much ass.

Word...and I am SUCH as sucker for those multi-part, layered guitar solos. GawdDAMN I love that sound.

Phil Lynott was so fucking cool. As others have mentioned, "Jailbreak" is probably the best album overall, but "Dedication" is a pretty solid "best of" if yer just lookin' for a taste.

Thin Lizzy kicks ass. Like already said, start with Jailbreak. If you dig that one, you can go on to stuff like Bad Reputation or Johnny the Fox.

Thin Lizzy trivia...Phil Lynott of the band was the founder of the Greedies, a late 70s group with a rotating cast that at one time included both Paul Cook and Steve jones of Sex Pistols fame.

Favorite line from Strangers with Candy..."you're looking awfully thin, Lizzy."

To be fair, it's one of the best-known traditional irish songs. I'm pretty sure you knew and all, but you know.

For me, what made Lizzy stand out from the '70s pack was that Lynott was influenced by the same forces that forged Van Morrison and Springsteen. Subsequently, Lizzy rocked and never rawked - and that means a lot of their stuff (not all of it, unfortunately) has dated fairly well (proof of that lies in the Dirtbombs' cover of Lynott's "Ode To A Black Man").

Edit: Lynott also helped out on Johnny Thunders' So Alone (along with Paul Cook and Steve Jones of the Pistols, and Peter Perrett of the Only Ones), so, like, that alone makes him worthy of worship.

yeah, but I don't think Mark Kozalek, Pulp and John Darnielle are all listening to traditional irish....nevermind.

From Wikipedia
However, Lynott was not free of drugs, and eventually died from the after-effects of an overdose, at his home in Ireland. He was only 36 years old.

From AMG:
Lynott died on January 4, 1986 - his body giving out from all the years of abuse and hard living

Wow. We suck.

Fighting is my favorite, but the two after that are quite solid also. Things started to get a little sketchy after that.

I've been really getting into them over the past year. I only have Dedication on cd but I've downloaded a crapload of other songs that aren't on it. I like some of their slow-ish stuff (Dancin' In The Moonlight, That Woman's Gonna Break Your Heart), more than the rock songs like Jailbreak or The Boys Are Back In Town.
