...which I'm not sure if anybody would do but it would be a lot of fun I think.

I was thinking of putting together a mix CD where people on the board contribute by adding one song to the mix. With that said, my idea consists of me starting off the mix with one song, and then sending it via mail to the next CMJer who would then burn the second track. That CMJer would then mail the mix CD, now containing 2 tracks, to the next CMJer on the list where he/she would burn the third track. This would probably take a while to get it done but if people promise to burn their track one or two days after they receive the CD and then mail it out, we should get this done in a month or so. After everyone who's involved has burned their tracks, the CD would be sent back to me to finalize it (I own a Philips CD recorder which requires CDs to be finalized). After it's done, I would then send copies to everyone who contributed and perhaps anyone interested in a copy.

I would say we need about 15 people to get this started. I haven't really finalized the rules yet as I wanted to get an idea of how many people would be interested in this sort of thing.

EDIT: If we get an overwhelming amount of people wanting to do this then, we'll do two or three separate mixes.

I want in.

Edit: And please make sure to be very detailed with the rules so I can be sure to break them.

number one, it's a good idea. number 2, is there really any reason to do this via mail in this day and age? perhaps yousendit.com or something represents a more viable alternative?

Well, I thought about that but I thought it would be more fun for people to get the CD in the mail. Also, people probably won't know what songs will be added to mix until the whole mix is finalized and I don't think we can do that online.

How about everyone gets a random number, then sends you an mp3? I know the "getting it in the mail" concept is cool, but, with the whole reburning/sending/ect. process, there's a good chance the whole thing could fall apart...

I'm up for sticking something on there, though...

I understand that, but all each person has to do is - receive the CD, burn one song on CD, mail CD out to next person. I will provide all the info needed such as name and address of the person you need to send it to. That's not too much work and I totally trust that the people on this board would not slack off.

don't we already have a means to do this with the gmail thing? i would suggest assigning a theme and then having people send songs to one account or something.

I think it's a good idea, but still, you may run into problems w/ physically sending it through the mail. Someone may sit on it too long whether or not you trust them, it could get lost in the mail, or with as many people this would go to, the disc could get scratched.

I'm all for trying this.

Some things I'm not clear on:

Are you talking about burning each song as a "session"? If so, you realize that this CD isn't going to play in most (any?) CD players except for the first song.

However, I don't really see why the original CD necessarily has to survive the whole ordeal. If the disc gets screwed up (like if someone closes/finishes/finalizes the disc by accident), the mix could always be re-burned onto a new CD.

So I think this could work, but probably not with just one CD. It's possible, though.

I'd like to participate.

I don't do the MP3/electronic thing. My stuff's all solid state.

I imagine the recipient would start a new disc when the original arrives, appending one track after dubbing the previous entries.

I liked Chase's mix that he put together in 30 minutes using mp3 links CMJers sent him.

Anyone remember that collaborative song we were writing years ago, and how everyone got bored of it by the time it was half done and it never got finished.

Don't let that happen to this.

Sounds cool.
Do we have to actually mail a cd, or can we email a .zip file or something.
We could share it on Clever Cactus with only the next person on the list.

Either way, count me in.

I volunteer to gather all the songs if ya'lls wanna e-mail or IM them. Or slsk or maybe I can get some FTP access. We did this on another board and it came out great. I'd be the only one who knows the songs. I'll also possibly burn the copies and send them out, as long as the number isn't too ridiculous. Personally, I don't even know how to burn a cd and keep it open to burn again, my software doesn't cover that.

Yeah, I'm curiously interested. But Drinky's points are what exactly ran through my head.

I'm hesitant because of the idea that a lot of problems with people's cd burners(like mine) could fuck the whole thing up.

There's got to be another way that we can do this and not have it go bad.
