'city of god' - great look into the slums and gang life of rio dejaneiro. technically a beautiful film.

'amelie' - romantic comedy i guess. a lead character that you will in love with. Also, a movie that had a happy ending that i liked.

KONTROLL (Hungary, 2003) -- Grimy-lensed story of a failed architect's emergence from his job as a subway cop and life underground. WARNING: HAS FURRIES. WELL, ONE - WHO IS QUITE CUTE OUTSIDE OF HER BEAR-SUIT (ESZTER BALLA... HAWT!) - BUT STILL MAYBE ONE TOO MANY.

Pather Panchali - The first in Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy. A beautiful, incredible look at Empire-era, 20c. India. (Yes, that is where the Simpsons got the character name, and they even refrence the films in one episode!)

you've probably seen all of these but here are a few of my favorites:

--blue
--400 blows
--artemesia (so maybe you haven't seen this one)
--farewell my concubine (i saw this recently and was completely blown away. if you haven't seen this you should. it's a beautiful story that runs alongside the cultural history of china. it's perfect.)

for the past six months i have been trying to rent the one copy that blockbuster owns of "my voyage to italy." it's a documentry about martin scorcese's early influences. i love the guy. maybe it's time to join netflix.

ps--i HATED amelie. but then i'm a bitch.

Music-related Indie Films:

Watch Me Jumpstart - About the history of GBV. Alternately fascinating and somnambulant. Brilliant music, of course.

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - The Wilco flick

The Decline Of Western Civilization - Best punk rock documentary - EVER! If only for the creepiness of Darby Crash. Profiles of The Germs, X, Fear, Circle Jerks, and other 80's LA punk pioneers. Brilliant. A must-see for everybody on this board!

Schultze gets the blues

(my number one of 2005... yes, it was released in Europe - and possibly larger U.S. cities - in '04, and it sucks that I didn't live there or use a p2p to get it (when it was readily available if I only wanted to try (and since I ended up liking it so much, I should have)), but I'm still putting it on my best of '05 - suck on that release-date obsessive twats!)

Not a single movie in that list is less than A- material.
Woo's Hong Kong stuff with Chow Yun-Fat was amazing.

Awesome film. Is it on DVD now?

I'm pretty sure DWC II - The Metal Years is still only on VHS, but it's just as much a classic, IMO, if not exactly for the same reasons. It focuses on mid-80s hair metal bands in LA. It's like Spinal Tap, only REAL. Highly entertaining.
