A group like the Chicago Underground Duo, does this music sell a lot of albums/tickets? What is this genre anyway, just jazz? I downloaded a track from the aforementioned band from someone on soulseek, and I think it was listed under acid jazz, what's acid jazz?

And any recommendations? I'm looking more for contemporary musicians and artists, thanks!

I relate acid jazz to some of the early 90's artists like Jamiroquai, Corduroy, James Taylor Quartet, and Mother Earth. Real slick, funky, and danceable jazz/funk.

Corduroy's "High Havoc" is an ESSENTIAL acid jazz record IMO.

Acid Jazz is such a slippery term that has spawned many an internet arguements between myself & others. Ahhhhhhh the memories......

My belief is Jazz for the late 80's early 90's UK club crowd raised on "Rare Groove" (a fancy term coined by Norman Jay & his pirate radio show on KISS UK for Soul, Funk, Jazz, Jazzy Hip Hop) & the key is it's a live act. Samples can be included, but it can't be entirely sample based. At least that what I got out of a Gilles Peterson (a fancy guy who coined the term & also had a radio show KISS UK & was friends with Jay) article in an early 90's Urb. But I've heard 70's Jazz labled Acid Jazz, which I'm okay with (even if the term didn't exist back then), & sampled based stuff like DJ Shadow & DJ Krush which I'm not okay with.

Galliano "A Joyful Noise Unto the Creator" is a fave of mine

Chicago Underground Duo seems more post-rock to me. But that's another annoying genre name. If you like them I would look into more of the Thrill Jockey stuff. Tortoise, etc.....

If it has a live vibraphone and released after Bitches Brew, it's acid jazz. If not, it still might be acid jazz. ;)

Check out Nels Cline if you want more skronky jazz like CUD. Also check out Thirsty Ear's Blue Series releases - this is all very forward-looking jazz. If Matthew Shipp's name is on it, it's probably a good candidate to check out.
