I've had "All We Ask" in my head pretty much 24/7 for like 3 days... to the point where I don't like it anymore, and am willing to try something desperate to pry it out of there. Fucking thing just keeps floating up to the top again.

that's because it's fucking awesome. just give in already, stop fighting it.

No I embraced it, and a few others from the album. Then they started putting their feet up on the furniture and drinking my beer and shit.

I sampled this today. Not my thing. Sounds like "Horse with No Name" but without melody.

Been reserving judgment for a while, but I guess whether or not I like this was never in question, just how much.

Still not sure. I think Fleet Foxes kind of ruined Grizzly Bear for me, if that makes any sense. I like both bands, but I can't help but be a little bored by this sort of thing now.

Still, several really solid songs on here: "While You Wait for the Others", "Two Weeks", "All We Ask", and "Foreground". It's very good overall, but there's a little too much "pretty stuff" thrown into the mix in several places making the whole thing feel just a little too soft and homogeneous.

I like "Two Weeks" but nothing else stands out for me.

I agree, really. This isn't the sort of thing I'm really seeking out or interested in with new bands. I think it is a passing trend, and a lot of newer groups are moving in a totally different direction. I mean, the whole neo-lo fi thing could be just as much a reaction against this kind of thing as anything else.

That said, this is still a good record that has managed to grow on me.

So, wait, neo-lo-fi is more interesting?

Sounds come and go. Rarely does anyone ever release a record that contains well-written and well-crafted songs anymore. This record sounds good as well as being good.

I didn't say that at all. It can be refreshing when done well. Of course it's nothing new, but direct, gutteral simplicity with little regard for polish and precision has a timeless charm if solid songs are at the core.

Yeah, well, isn't that what I was saying?

Hasn't that always been rare? I don't know that it's any more rare now than before. If by "well-crafted" you're referring to "professionalism" in musicianship and recording, then maybe. I do agree that a band doing this as well as Grizzly Bear is rare, even if this sound is "everywhere". Veckatimest is well-written and well-crafted in a way that has always been rare, and I don't mean to downplay that. It's just hard not to be "over" a certain aesthetic that's been pretty pervasive in the indie/mainstream cusp scene over the past 5 or so years.

Yeah, why do we bother with these "discussions"?

Every new album should just get a poll thread.

Good?

-Yes
-No

(with a link to the album included, of course)

Posts in the thread would not be necessary since votes speak for themselves.

I've listened to it at least 5 times since yesterday and it's definitely a grower. Several songs (ie. Dory, Foreground) really come to life after repeated listens.

Got this in the mail on Saturday and have given it a proper five to seven spins. Definitely the best album I've heard this year. I disagree with whoever said these guys are terrible singers. Both have amazing voices in my opinion. It seems that half the bands that get indie press nowadays have vocalists that don't have true talent, just voices that sound different. These guys both have gifted voices and the band is noteworthy for that alone.

Not sure what I can add to this thread. Just that I'm getting a little bored with the two factions we seem to have here now. One group hates all things like Grizzly Bear and looooooves Rancid and that fucking John Doe and the Sadies album. The other shits themselves over The Dirty Projectors and dismisses genuinely good albums by somebody like the Noisettes. I don't know..... If I don't like a band or a song, I don't say that it's bad music. Just that I don't like it and maybe somebody with different tastes will.

Actually the board is really only polarized to that degree by sheer volume... the loudest are the most polar. In the middle, in turns out, is the Silent Sensitive Majority, who don't post or argue their feelinsg much, but whose tastes are pretty mainstream and rounded.

It’s interesting that something that sounds so beautiful to me, can be boring and trite to someone else. And I’m not saying that factiously. For instance, there’s a moment at the end of I Live With You (Track 11) where the children’s choir sings for a bit, then there’s some laughter and then a “shhhhhhhâ€

My favorite album of the year so. Only the Dirty Projectors album has come closest to me.
