Born Cross-Eyed

Quote:
Born Cross-Eyed was performed about a dozen times by the Grateful Dead in the early months of 1968.

Hmmm...yeah, probably better that this didn't survive to be a long-standing setlist addition. If this was instro this would be better. What is that in the background Hare Krishna chanters?

Spanish Jam

Its there, and I don't have many thoughts on it. About the middle of the song, I found out that my friend--who is 30--has breast cancer, again. Damn.

Onto day 2...

for the big caveat about sound quality I think this sounds pretty damn great, and there is even instrument separation without being over panned in a gimmicky way.

I can still lose momentum on some of their songs like Spanish Jam...just not enough for me to grab onto. But I am very much liking this version of Morning Dew.

Sorry about your friend. The more time I spend online the more chances I get to hear about people getting cancer. Fucking scary...

This set (especially this first song, and just the sickness that it brings) is totally exemplary of why so many disparate types of music lovers are into the Dead.

I think that Dumpjack and I definitely come at it from a Jail Rock perspective, jsh and flying rabbit from the PPDD side of things, and then e-stone and bloor are just z-grade ex hippies from the early 90s :)

Like everyone said -- I have Viola Lee Blues on at an unreasonable volume, and I think 2 of my employees are ready to quit and march down to the DoL and make a complaint.

I'm really glad I picked this set because a Tuesday morning of something from the 90s would have truly killed me. Bloor picks the next one.

Like jasn, 'Morning Dew' sounds great right now.

I'm feeling like I'm in school for this exercise, but can't claim to be a newbie. I first saw The Dead at Watkins Glen in '73...or at least heard them.

First saw the G. Dead in 1970 at Hollywood Palladium, Pigpen still alive. I have seen them, maybe 25 times including last spring as The Dead. I am avoiding this thread.

Good Morning Little School Girl

I'm liking this right now. Sonny Boy Williamson cover, and man, are they hitting it. Sounds like they are having fun. Again, this is the band just getting their legs, and playing stuff they're passionate about.

Yikes, harry.

'That's It For The Other One' is bleeding out my stereo right now.

Thanks. Yeah, its a blow and scares you when someone is so young, with no history in their family.

That's It For The Other One

Quote:
That's It For The Other One was initially released as a 'suite' of four sections:

Cryptical Envelopment (Garcia)
Quadlibet For Tender Feet (Weir)
The Faster We Go, The Rounder We Get (Grateful Dead)
We Leave The Castle (Grateful Dead)

The full suite was only released on Anthem Of The Sun.

Subsequently the opening part, Cryptical Envelopment, and an enlarged version of The Faster We Go The Rounder We Get, usually called The Other One, were the only parts played. They occur together and alone on live recordings.

The title, That's It For The Other One, has occasionally been used (as on Dick's Picks 4) to describe music that is not the full suite.

Interesting fact above. For songs I'm not 100% familiar with, I've been researching to see their background.

The organ parts are doing it for me. Turning this up.

@5:45 turned up AGAIN.

New Potato Caboose

A Phil song. Meh. This is my bathroom song in this set.

Last 1/3 of song gets semi-interesting but then finds its meh form again.

Alligator

Yes! I saw that this was on the set and rejoiced. I'm a fan of Alligator, mostly because of Pigpen's often involvement in early incarnations live. So far, this has been worth going through NPC for.

I just finished and rank it a B+/A--, if only some minor meandering. Standouts for me were 'Lovelight' 'That's It for the Other One' and the very awesome opening one-two punch of 'Viola Lee Blues'/'Hurts Me Too'.

China Cat Sunflower>The Eleven

This feels like a reprise even though this is from a 2nd night. Still good, and I think even tighter and better than night 1.

No matter how fast Dark Star is played here, it still has gong. I don't know how Flying Rabbit can say this song is a downer. It's got to be one of the most mystical songs I've ever heard, in all its guises, and for all the amazing sets its launched. This show is ferocious even before they get to Dark Star, and it's placed really early, by what I know.

Anyone have that "Grayfolded" release by John Oswald? "Using over a hundred different performances of the song "Dark Star" between 1968 and 1993, John Oswald built, layered, and "folded" all of them to produce one large, recomposed version spanning sixteen minutes short of two hours."

Alligator

Yup, I can deal with going back and revisiting this. I loving the percussion rhythm at the beginning of this. Digging a groove, and just sitting in it.

@3:50...there's where we're going.

I know that a lot of Dead fans consider "Dark Star" one of their crowning achievements, but it's never really done anything for me.

By downer I meant in tempo. After the blitzing performances off the top, this comes in and mellows out and gets you to pay attention rather than tappin' yr feet away.

Caution>Feedback

Well done on picking this show. Dang. This is going to be kept, and definitely listened to again. Really great show, and despite the warning on quality, it sounded good to these ears.

Off the top were heavy, and good loud barnburners. Dig when a set starts off that way and builds up the audience into a good sweat. Alligator is always great as mentioned above. This era was great for so many reasons, but these sets really show love for Pigpen and the inspired renditions of blues tunes.
