Yeah, brooks brothers stuff tends to run small. I bought two medium shirts from there recently and it was so tight and tiny on me that I might have well been a hipster, and medium tends to be slightly big on me from other designers. I feel like a lot of European designers would have good fits for the smaller man.

Personally, I think there's a difference between hipsters, fashionistas and people who are just stylish. I'd *like* to think I lean toward the stylish end, but it's all subjective. Portland is overrun with hipsters, and with that I include: fixie bike riders, skinny jeans, assymetrical haircuts, scarves worn in summertime, thick rimmed glasses (worn legitimately or ironically), flannel that usually fit snugly... I'm sure there are more descriptors. Then there are fashionistas which could be mistaken as hipsters. I've got a friend who's fairly bleeding edge when it comes to fashion. I made the joke with Kyle earlier that white belts were so 4 years ago-- this particular friend of mine not only had a white belt at least 5+ years ago, but it also had an LED light display on the buckle, which he could program various phrases into it (and yeah, he wore it for maybe 3-4 months, only at parties and such, and retired it). He normally wears dark-wash narrow leg denim jeans and will wear heavy scarves in wintertime, but I've also seen him in hoodies and Vans before too. I guess I'd describe him more as fashionista or stylish, and he tends to skew towards an urban vibe. But I think the thing that really differentiates him for me-- it doesn't look like a uniform. It looks like what he would wear, and he's not doing it for anyone else.

I think this thread has a hard time separating hipsters from pretentious. All hipsters are pretentious. Not all pretentious folks are hipsters.

My grandfather was wearing white belts at least 10 years ago. He's so far behind the fashion curve, he's ahead of it.

There are too many micro-cultures within the overall hipster macro-culture to have a absolutely concise definition, but I think whomever posted the "early-adopter" (which is a Marketing 101 term) reference is probably the closest in providing a generalized definition.

well my grandfather tied an onion on his belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

I have thick rimmed glasses and a keffiyeh :)

But I see your distinction and agree.

So much of this has to do with perceived intent. How do you know, really, why these people do what they do?

I mean I get that this is what the term often implies. People trying too hard, poseurs, scenesters, etc. It just has a lot of contradictory usage.

Not to pull the "I don't really care that much" card this late in the game, but honestly I'm not that hung up on or even interested in this topic. There are plenty of ubiquitous internet terms that I find equally annoying, and the solution to my problem is obvious: Spend less time on the internet.

There are so many political words that people throw around to try to seem smart or in the know that just drive me fucking nuts.

There's a simple formula, which, whether it's right or not, might offer some help.

If I see a guy with skinny jeans and razor-cut boohoo hair and a white belt and all that shit walking around, and I say to myself "he looks like a hipster," then he is a hipster, for me. Hipsterdom is in the eye of the beholder.

When I was in Austin, I was telling Phil and Chad and Fu one of the funnier things about Montgomery is that there are NO HIPSTERS. And if a guy tried the skinny jeans/jagged hair look, I would fear for his safety.

I also wonder how many of these people don't get there ass kicked. In most of the places I've been wearing skinny jeans doesn't mean that you're a hipster, it means you're a fag. Not say thats what I think, just the general perception.
