As far as I see it, a "10" should be two things: 1) the best thing an artist has ever done, and 2) better than anything just about any other artist has ever done.

A "9" should be one of two things, the second best thing an artist with a "10" has done, or the best thing an artist has done and is better than 90% of the rest of the stuff out there. There should be no weak tracks on a "9".

An "8" is a very very very good album. It may have a weak moment or two, and some songs may not stand up so well, but on the whole it's solid stuff.

A "7" is a very good album, where at least half of the songs are stellar. I'll allow 2-3 weak tracks.

I won't keep anything below a "6" in my library. "6" is like a "C", it doesn't fail, but it ain't gonna get you into a decent college nor impress anyone hiring for a really good job.

Twice already I've been brilliant enough to rate the wrong album. Is there a possibility of being able to take back an errant entry?

Use Allmusic if there are any disagreements about year, title etc.

I'll try to work that in.

Ok, so I lied about getting adjustable page length and "back to list" buttons implemented tonight. The former will be easy, the latter might be a little annoying, but is a necessary evil. For my own reference, and so others can add, the update priority list is:

1. Adjustable page length
2. Edit album you posted page (probably simultaneously with adding "description" field)
3. "Back to list" links on one-off pages
4. "Rate all" button
5. Un-rate option
6. Genres if anyone will help come up with a good list
7. Flaming skull gif
8. Eagle head with flag super-imposed and "support our troops" label

Frostingspoon do you really love all those albums?

I didn't realize you were a big Wu-Tang or Max Richter fan, and you haven't talked about Common or Venetian Snares this year as far as I'm aware, yet you give all those albums great ratings. You don't have to rate everything you know.

I don't own any of those albums, but they certainly are very good and I should own them. Hip-hop's not my overall preference, but I know when certain releases stand out from the pile. Haven't had any Wu-Tang for several years, but have a friend who played them nearly every time I was at his place. Common is the current favorite of several relatives and I've heard the CD enough to respect it a lot.

Venetian Snares I've only heard this past week and thought it was great. Like if classical composers had discovered break beats in the 17th century or something.

Richter is the sort of composer whom I've always liked but never get around to buying enough of because my budget's already been spent on some indie pop or power pop thing or other. But Blue Notebooks is a gorgeous album.

Genres are going to be a pain, because nobody will agree on what goes where.

I'm probably in the minority in the thinking that you keep it record store simple: Rock/Pop, R&B/Soul, Rap/Hip-Hop, Blues and Country, with maybe a nod to Electronic, International (good call el coton), Metal/Hardcore, Reggae and Unlistenable (I'm looking right at you Mike Skinner).

A soundtrack "genre" might be useful also because of all the varying artists they many times contain. But, I'm with Cory that it remain simple

Steve

How about page index at the bottom?
You know... a JUMP TO PAGE kinda link?
That'd be nice.

I haven't had a chance to read this thread yet, but the whole chart thing looks pretty nifty.

i don't know if this has been said, but it'd be nice for after you rate an album, to take you back to the page that it was on, rather than having to start from the first page again.

It has been said that you can just click "back" for now, bitch.

Has anybody said why they think it's a bad idea to have lots of genres, and the ability to attach several genres to an album (that anybody can add to/change), so that we can avoid getting angry about which specific genre an album fits in, but we can (if we choose) generate more interesting top X lists? I think it's a good idea, but no one else seems to.

I'm glad you can judge albums so well from snippets, relative's favourites and memories of listening to them years ago. Remind me not to listen to any of your well thought out recommendations.

I mean, seriously, how many times have you actually played Dre's 2001, Refused The Shape Of Punk To Come or Vitalic's OK Cowboy (just examples)?
