I don't know if I'd want to hear a breakup album from Gibbard.

Watched American Teen tonight since I knew my gf eats shit like that up. It was pretty great. I became a fan of Hannah on Facebook.

Saw The Wrestler tonight. An all around downer with a lot of intense moments, but a pretty good flick. Thought it had an awkward ending. Guess I was hoping for closure on certain things and it kind of left you hanging, but that was probably the writer's intention.

Just watched The Wrestler.

I loved it.

I didn't expect to see some of the things that went on during the matches/backstage scenes which was definitely a nice bonus, imo. Rourke's character (similar to Rocky) is very likeable and someone you want to root for. It was also very cool to see all the positivity amongst the wrestlers during the backstage scenes.

No wonder Vince McMahon hated it.

Rourke did a helluva job and i'm glad that he's getting recognized for it

(I HOPE TO SEE YOU IN IRONMAN II!)

I'm on the opposite side of the fence on this one, d. I saw this last night and think it might have been one of my favourite 2008 movies.

Sorry DJ, I'm with D on this one. The only funny parts of the movie were the CIA inner office meetings.

I didn't find it particularly hilarious or anything, it had its moments, I just really enjoyed the story.

Yeah, it had moments, but I didn't care much for the movie, overall.

Never.
More like a second rate Fargo.

Saw Slumdog Millionaire yesterday afternoon. It was OK, but I was a bit disappointed after hearing raves. A bit trite for my tastes, but interesting visually and some good music.

yeah i don't understand what the point of it was either. i guess i can see why she did what she did at the end but it kind of negates the rest of the movie.

did you see timecrimes? it's not as well thought out as primer but it's pretty interesting.

Hunger (A) - Bloody brilliant, beautifully shot and graphically violent.

The Wrestler (A-) - This took me by suprise, Rourke is outstanding, i really felt for his character, in fact i really liked all the wrestlers. Gritty, depressing, loved it.

Let The Right One In (A-) - Pale, cold, again beautifully shot. Vampires.

Slumdog Millionaire (B-) - Thoroughly enjoyable but cheesy. Had the opposite thoughts to most people regarding the films music, felt it did not fit very well. Great locations, makes me want to go Mumbai real bad.

We watched the French movie Love Me If You Dare last night and thought it sucked. My wife and both hated it and hated both of the main characters, especially the guy. What an empty, pointless, drawn-out piece of crap.

yup. I liked it. I wouldn't go as far as "amazing" but it was very interesting.

Ballast was really good.

My review: Story of poverty in rural Mississippi and the circumstances it creates for an estranged black family.

Going into it, I was afraid it would come off as an outsider's arty take on the South like most indie movies set in the South do (see Shotgun Stories). It didn't. It felt very real, nearly documentary. The setting was bleak and austere and that left room for the viewer to be drawn in and fill in the spaces with the depth of the characters. There wasn't a note of music in the entire film as the director used "live sound" to accompany the "space".
It has the ability to affect the viewer even if they don't personally know the experience of the characters. Growing up in and playing sports in the rural South, I knew kids that dealt with these same struggles, so in that way I could relate.

Rotten Tomatoes synopsis Wrote:
BALLAST is set in the Mississippi Delta, shot on location with nonprofessional actors who live in the region. Although there was a script, the dialogue was mostly improvised, and Hammer uses only natural sound and light, heightening the reality of the hard lives these people lead. Director of photography Lol Crawley often creates beautiful exterior landscapes that offer hope for the main characters, juxtaposing them with interior shots that find them contained in small places, trapped in their situation.

I can't recommend this enough. For me, one of the better films I've seen in the last year. However, it's probably not for those of you who complain of movies being "slow" or that like any Michael Bay movies.

Saw Contempt this week for the first time. Bridgitte Bardot's beautifully feminine ass was prominently featured in this movie that has no doubt influenced a generation of filmmakers.

A movie about making movies and relationships that are forged and left behind in the process. Godard deftly showed the often sudden final dissolution of romantic relationships and the continuous battle of art vs. commmerce. And wow, really nailed the stereotype of a pompous "American" with Jack Palance's character.

I saw this little bit of Mel Brooks mediocrity last night:

Decent, but seemed kind of forced to me.
