stayed away from the better known folk pop side of the group and stuck with the darker jangle rock side because it'll work better for most on this board.

Bad Brains

Hardcore rasta punks with a reggae heart. These guys would fly between breakneck hardcore punk and laid back reggae grooves at the flick of a switch. Other times, they'd mash the whole thing together. Here's a sampling that stretches back to their earliest recordings as Black Dots up to their latest release last year.

Banned In DC (as Black Dots)
Pay To Cum
I Love I Jah
How Low Can A Punk Get?
I and I Survive
I Against I
Sacred Love
Rise
How Low Can A Punk Get? (dub)
Build A Nation

Yeah, those Black Dots tracks are pretty fucking good. I almost used the Black Dots version of Pay to Cum too...you can actually almost make out lots of the words on that one.

EDIT:
And one note... the first time I ever played on-stage, in front of a real audience, I was in a band with Mr. onebrownjeff, and we played that first song -- "Every Kane". Jeff was on bass. But he's not on this recording.

To me, the most evocative band of '80's yet still holds up remarkably well.

Sardonic Irish singer-songwriter I'm thinking quite a few people here would like a lot. 80's Dylan filtered through Beck through Billy Bragg and if Lennon thought he were Ringo with Mike Scott in The Mountain Goats.
Never been well-known in North America, but should be.
Don't have several of his albums but these are culled from the ones I do have.

I have no idea what that is supposed to sound like but you probably had me willing to give it a go at "Irish" so thanks.

The Ringo bit is more in his love songs, but I didn't include any of those.

Superdrag

Image

from allmusic:
Though many have dubbed Superdrag a punk-pop or power pop band, their music has shown itself to be atop of the aforementioned genres. Taking as much influence from the British Invasion-style pop of the Beatles and the Zombies as My Bloody Valentine and Hüsker Dü, their songs have always combined melodicism and noise in fully distinct fashion. While many have compared frontman John Davis to Big Star's Alex Chilton in terms of his throaty vocals, often cynical lyrics, and major-minor chord progressions, the history of the two Tennessee-based groups have shared many parallels in terms of being a band's band that has often gone misunderstood.

A collective headed up by Frank Orall that started in Hawaii, went to Texas, settled in Chicago and has tried out folk, worldbeat, indiepop, electronic, soul, house, funk, jazz and several other dance styles over the years.
A mix truly sounds like a mix in this case.

One of the few bands to come out of christian music that can genuinely be called consistently intriguing, and over a long span of time.

DA have been a sort of parallel-universe chronicle of music styles for almost 35 years, never getting famous, always too ornery for conservatives and mostly unknown to the greater musical world.

They've morphed from Jesus country rock origins in 1974 to classic rock, postpunk, new wave, modern rock, alternative rock, indie, and finally elder eccentrics referenced by younger acts.

Through it all DA have scoffed, poked at and lampooned self-righteousness and right wing charlatans while somehow managing to put albums out.

Worth looking into for people who have no interest in anything god-related because they've always been funny and have never put out formulaic CCM.

A band I still like even though I've had no dealings with the christian music industry in over a decade.

DA affiliated folks also have a slew of long-running side projects like Swirling Eddies and Lost Dogs and Terry Taylor has some rather good solo albums.

Hüsker Dü

Most of you surely know the deal with Hüsker Dü, where Bob Mould got his start. They progressed from a noisy thrashy wall of noise chaos to something still edgy and energetic but somewhere along the line learned to write great poppy hooks and melodies to bury in the squall. Here's a sampler of some of my favorites of theirs:

Sunshine Superman
Never Talking To You Again
Pink Turn To Blue
Terms of Psychic Warfare
Books About UFOs
Makes No Sense At All
Flexible Flyer
Sorry Somehow
Could You Be The One?
She Floated Away

I just downloaded a nearly 5GB Sparks torrent. That's a lotta songs to make a tenner out of, but some of my Sparks is on worn out cassettes still.

Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons

This is basically what Aussie pub rock sounded like circa '79 - pretty much a road-worn band grafting the Stones to Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True (in fact, Costello covered their "So Young" as a b-side to an early single). They're really not worthy of more than a footnote in the rock history books, but they did manage to put out a string of fine albums. This tenner draws mostly from my personal favorite (Screaming Targets).

1. Hit And Run
2. Don't Wanna Come Down
3. Only The Lonely Heart
4. So Young
5. Trials and Tribulations
6. Thin Line
7. Open Hearted
8. Sweet Honey Sweet
9. Too Hot
10. Rub Up, Push Up
