i haven't even thought about this yet. i still haven't done one for last year. so no i have no idea, but among them would be (in no order):
Beauty and the Beat - Edan
S/T - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
Porcella - The Deadly Snakes
The Sunset Tree - Mountain Goats
Separation Sunday - The Hold Steady
The Fire in Our Throats will Beckon the Thaw - Pelican

with maybe the Son Volt, Spoon & Fruit Bats albums, I haven't exactly thought this out at all. I'm sure there's something i'm missing.

Wow, I hadn't realized I had bought so many new releases this year. Maybe actually updating my 2005 purchase list once in a while would help.

I'll throw out a few names, but this is nowhere near a thought out list.

Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic
Brenden Benson - The Alternative to Love
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
Shout Out Louds - Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs

I can't really rank them just yet, but the top 8 contenders would be:

+ Low - The Great Destroyer
+ Colleen - the Golden Morning Breaks
+ Sam Prekop - Who's Your New Professor?
+ The Duke Spirit - Cuts Across The Land
+ The High Dials - War of the Waking Phantoms
+ Broadcast - (whatever the new one is going to be called)
+ Daniel Lanois - Belladonna
+ Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep

(I throughly LOVE all 8 of these. I know, I know I haven't even heard the new Broadcast yet... but I love it already.)

honourable mentions:
- Brian Eno - Another Day on Earth
- Dead Meadow - Feathers
- Black Mountain - s/t
- M.I.A – Arular
- Beck - Guero

I'm happy to see Low get some recognition. That's a great album. And I know some Low fans weren't too happy with it, but it'll definitely be in my Top 20, maybe Top 10, depending on how well other releases (My Morning Jacket, Broken Social Scene) do.

Yeah, I really like that album. I understand why some die-hard fans wouldn't, but I find it to be a real natural progression for them. It's nice to hear them expand their sound.

the quickest comparison they have with me is Magneta Lane, only somehow sexier. Loud rock with a low end and a female singer.

I realize it's probably sacrilage to some, but I actually prefer Low's new sound to the old. The Great Destroyer will almost certainly end up top 5 for me.

Don't expect much from the New Pornographers album, it's awful. Don't like the direction they're going in at all. I've tried listening to it at least 10 times this week and not once have I been able to get thru the whole album.

OPA, you're gay and I agree with you. IMO, the New Pornos seem to have the Dana Carvey Show complex - talent behind the scenes, but the collective effort does very little for me. Love Neko, like Destroyer, AC and Fancy on their own. Overall, love for this band has waned since MR.
