If I had pledged $375 to NPT (Nashville Public TV/PBS), I would've received the CD version Archives Vol.1. They were airing the Neil doc, "Don't Be Denied" during their pledge drive on Sunday night.

I'll get it eventually. Maybe as a birthday gift? I have questions and concerns: I can't decide what format to buy in. I don't own Blu-Ray, but my soon-to-be new roommate does. But he doesn't have a full home stereo system. Do I buy the Blu-Ray for future views? And how much time will I spend with this anyway and how will I get all of the value out of the boxed set without being able to listen to the tunes in my car or my work computer?

therein lies the biggest fallacy of the boxset. The blu-ray set looks impressive, and in theory its a great way to embrace a boxset, but in reality its a waste of money. Unless it contains mp3s/flac of the audio it will be a glorified NY dust collector. How many times will you sit and really take advantage of its full potential?

*edit* and I see this:

a download card for MP3s of all the tunes.
which softens my stance a bit.

This is the last look given to all of those fellow musicians who were over the years shunned by Neil at one time or another.

I believe that his Archives era albums are getting the remastered treatment (Neil Young, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, Harvest), you can't really go wrong with the last three and would be a reasonably good introduction if you want albums. If not, just pick up Decade.

I second the Decade rec. Its the best place to start, and will give you a great selection of early Neil classics.

I discovered my mom's tape version of "Decade" the summer after my freshman year of college. After a good two months I think my Walkman yelled "enough already!" at me.

The other nice thing about decade is it has songs written by Neil for CSN&Y and Buffalo Springfield - not just solo albums..

Wow, how'd this slip by:

Neil Young: After the Gold Rush (remastered)
Neil Young: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (remastered)
Neil Young: Harvest (remastered)
Neil Young: Neil Young (remastered)

I wonder if they are just volume adjusted, or if they were truly reworked and remastered by Neil.

Wait have those been released separately, or are those just part of the box?

Because the stuff on the box set is supposed to sound great. Like actually remastered.

I was just about to order these in, Amazon.ca has Neil Young for $4.99 and Everybody Knows... for $7.99. The other two are $10 and I actually only on physical copies of two of these, so I might as well seeing as they're not part of the Archives.

Did anyone else pick these up? Not surprisingly, they sound significantly better than those initial releases. Definitely worth picking up, particularly at these prices.

Cool. I'll probably snag all 4 at some point.

Never owned a copy of the s/t, and I don't really like it. But what the hell.

You know I used to feel the same way, and thought at $5, why not just pick up Neil Young and give it another shot. I'm glad I did because I think it really benefited the most from the remaster. While still not a great album, I enjoyed it more than I have previously. Maybe just the fuller sound or maybe just placebo. Who knows.

Also I don't dislike Harvest as much as I usually do but still really hate the strings on 'A Man Needs a Maid'.

those are there because he intended that song to be part of a broadway-style suite (as revealed in the Massey Hall disc), but yeah, I hate them too.

Nope, they will not.

And now for the news:

Neil Young Preps New Archival Live Album Dreamin’ Man

Just in case we didn’t already get enough, a mere three months after Neil Young’s massive Archives Volume One box set came out, the Canadian rocker has announced a new disc of archival live material will be released on November 2.

Called Dreamin’ Man, the record is a complete live performance of Young’s classic Harvest Moon album, culled from various acoustic solo shows that went down in 1992. And as some fans may have guessed by now, it comes as the latest live disc in Young’s ongoing Archival Performance Series.
