Rodney, after speaking with someone in the security (alarm systems, keycode access) I would bet dollars to donuts that this is the answer to your series of questions.

I have a pretty crazy story about this incident.

As I have mentioned before, I am in a moped gang here in SF, and we are friends with other moped groups all over the country, two of which are in Virginia -- Richmond and Blacksburg. The people in the Blacksburg group all go to VA Tech. I don't know any of them personally, but I am good friends with a lot of the Richmond people, who know the Blacksburg people.

After this happened, my friend from Richmond contacted the Blacksburg people to see if they were okay. None of them were killed or injured, however, one of them was in the classroom where all those people were killed. He was apparently one of only two people to walk out of there alive, and he did this by playing dead.

Completely agree. One of the guys on 790 (Chernoff) just wouldn't shut up about the 2 hour delay in sending out the campus email. I'm sick of the media trying to put an emphasis on that.

There is NOTHING that could've prevented this.

Also, you have (HAVE TO) weigh the costs of a campus and even townwide panic caused by sounding the alarm. You best friend in crisis (aside from, in this case, being able to return fire) is a cool head (many of which were displayed amongst the dead and the survivors) and information..none of which was available, because the police, acting on a good tip (boyfriend with a gun) focused on him.

My fiance theorized that because there was no freakout response (alarms, sirens, etc) to the first two shootings that the dude REALLY lost it because even killing two people didnt get him any attention.

Damn, y'all had killed two folks and STILL nobody gives a fuck about you...time to go bucky.

's kinda like that dude who blogged about killing himself (war protest? The Crazy? I forget), then went up next to the freeway, lit himself on fire, and sat there and burned to death. But nobody noticed for a few days, and then it took them a week to identify the body or some such. Good job.

lying down next to a pile of bodies isn't necessarily playing dead when it's supplemented by being scared out of your mind.

I was watching the MSNBC coverage last night after watching a movie and they had this piece about this Lebanese girl who was a dancer that got shot during this incidence. She had spent several weeks in Lebanon this summer during their war with Israel and managed to make it out alive only to be shot and killed at a typically peaceful american university.
That hit me hard and showed how fucked up this all is. A person who was born into a violent state has their life ended in violence in what should be an incredibly serene place. What got me the most was her siblings describing how extraordinarily special she was and how she always seemed to be happy despite her surroundings or what was happening all around her.

That's just like the prof who survived the f'ing Holocaust, only to give his own life to allow his students to jump out a window. Good people.

yeah, how about the engineering professor who was a survivor of the holocaust, romanian regime under ceauşescu, and tel aviv in the 80s? what an extraordinary life he apparently led - still teaching at 76.

Also, there was a bomb threat on Minnesota's campus today and apparently 7 buildings were evacuated.

At Oregon's Lewis & Clark College, another student was detained by campus police Wednesday shortly before a vigil for the Virginia Tech victims when he was spotted wearing an ammunition belt. Portland police later determined that it was "a fashion accessory" made of spent ammunition, and said the man did not have a weapon. The belt was confiscated.

whatever they can do to stop stupid belt trends is ok in my book, though.

yahoo is now reporting that nbc news received a package from this guy that was timestamped between the dorm and classroom shootings. wow, so that's why there was a 2-hour gap - he was waiting in line at the post office. i wonder what's in that package.
