If I did, and could afford it, I'd be on the interwebs a lot more (or less) often. Doubt I'd find it in LA, anyhow...

The reissue's around $19 at Dusty Groove, but I'm a bit shy to pull the trigger on anything new over $15 - especially after already feeling a bit of buyer's regret over buying that Stones Throw comp. I mean, I'm sure it's amazing (didn't have time to listen/peruse anything yesterday after I got home), but I already have the Ofege full-length, and there were some other things I wanted to pick up, but put back...

Hell,

I've bought hundreds since the last post, but I'm sufficiently drunk enough to try to restart this one with my score from the Rhino Records Pop-Up store (after seeing Mike Watt play tonight w/the Missingmen, no less)...

...and the following reissues:

... which, all sealed except for the Don Covoy & Rhino comp, still cost me under $100, despite the "Jackson Inflation" that's currently going on, for whatever reason...

Wife passed by this giant stack of free vinyl on the sidewalk a few blocks from home last night, tossed it all on her bike (!), and reeled it in.

Image

Not much increibly exciting in here but plenty I didn't have. Most of it has some scratching on it, but so far everything plays.

Image

Seems to include almost everything Joni Mitchel and Emmylou Harris ever did prior to like 1985. Was really happy to get Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere and Revolver, even if both are worn in.

Most exciting: 2 sets of 4 records like this. One was classical, and the other was this...

Image

The discs themselves are slightly smaller in diameter, heavy as shit, and don't have an rpm listed on them but I am guessing it may not 33. Have to go google it now to see what the hell it is.

That Hillbilly Tunes set looks really cool. I'm guessing from the looks of the records, they're probably 78s.

Yup, I've got about a dozen of those sets, mostly jazz stuff and a couple binders full of Western Swing. Definitely 78s, and that booklet style was what started them being called albums. You need a table that spins 78s and a special needle to fit the wider grooves.

I found a page here that explained a lot. This one's from 1945, and I didn't take a pic of the classical set but it's probably '43-'45 sometime. Ideally someone on ebay would pay me like $40 or something for each set and I'd be done with it, I guess. I'm a little curious, but I suspect someone else would be much more into them than me.

Just put these in the queue. This is what I love about vinyl. I bought most of these for a dime a piece at a garage sale, and while they're not her best work, there are some great songs scattered throughout. Plus, they are all in great condition.

Nice with the Kitty Wells records. I've got a stash of Wanda Jackson back catalog lesser knowns that are fun to drag out in a similar vein. And as long as we're in the vinyl thread, here's what I picked up for about 20 bucks at the record show over the weekend:

James Brown: It's A Man's Man's Man's World - The only one where the vinyl is a bit scratchy, but after cleaning up plays a heck of a lot better than it looks with just an occasional pop or click.

Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: Tears of a Clown - Just a great album, that it seems was originally released under a different title then re-released once the title track became a big hit 3 years after the original release.

Black Sabbath: Paranoid - I've never been pleased with the muted sound of the fancy 180 gram re-issue of this I've been making due with for a few years now and had to grab an original to replace the long gone copy I remember fondly.

Cheap Trick: In Color - I really like the first few Cheap Trick albums, this is one of my favorites of theirs.

Simple Minds: Real to Real Cacophony - Hadn't heard this one before and it's actually really good, way more post-punk and angular than their later more pop sounding releases, interesting indeed.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Journey of Dreams - Still sealed. Pretty great voices, but I"m not familiar enough with their entire catalog to know how this particular release sticks up. It is beautiful though.

Wilson Pickett: Wicked Pickett - One of his best albums, includes Mustang Salley and a smattering of his bigger hits.

Cannonball Adderly with Sergio Mendes : Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars - Had never heard of this one but grabbed it on a whim, if you like the Getz/Gilberto combination and that 60 Bosa Nova style jazz stuff this is really good.

Duke Ellington Presents - I've never heard a bad Duke Ellington album, really.

Meet the Searchers: Needles & Pins - Better than average British invasion stuff, featuring their biggest hit and a lot of other solid, consistiently strong material.

The Suicide Commandos: Make a Record - I've had a mint copy of this one for yeas and it's an all time favorite, but I couldn't resist a second copy for $3. I was fairly shocked to see this one in the box.

So yup, a good day at the show and a lovely Sunday spent cleaning them up and listening.

I would LOVE to find Blues In Orbit on vinyl somewhere one day when I'm buying.

Blues in Orbit is good. But, here are a couple of my all time favorite Ellington records:

Image

Ellington Uptown is a short but sweet (5 track) classic featuring a fantastic version of Take the "A" Train, A Tone Parallel to Harlem, Skin Deep, Perdido, and The Mooche. Every song a classic.

Blues Summit is great to get to know Ellington in a small group setting away from the big band stuff. Blues Summit actually collects two albums, Side by Side and Back to Back that were Ellington Hodges collaboration. Both are fantastic so having them both together on a double is really nice.

I'd highly recommend grabbing either of these if you see 'em around.

I really need to stop wandering around flea markets on the weekends. This is getting out of hand. But, some good finds for cheap. The James BRown records are particularly welcome and in great shape. The pile below doesn't even count a stack of 20 50-60 45s for 2 bucks that are playing now.

Picked this up last night at the Hepa/Titus // Melvins Lite show last night. Great show, & I was psyched to find that it is one of 700 discs printed. Yay.

Bought the new Dirty Projectors on vinyl and it's skipping like a muddafugga. They may have spaced the grooves too close together or something.

Couldn't resist this lot of jazz 45s:

Image
Christopher Logue & Tony Kinsey - Red Bird Jazz & Poetry
Kai Winding's Birdlanders & Dizzy Gillespie and The Cool Jazz Stars - Two By Two
The George Shearing Trio - The Nearness Of You/ The Fourth Deuce/ Someone To Watch Over Me/ The Man From Minton's
Roy Eldridge And His Little Jazz - Hollywood Pastime/ Oh Shut Up/ I'd Love Him So/ The Heat's On
Roy Eldridge And His Little Jazz - The Man I Love/ Easter Parade/ I Remember Harlem/ Wild Driver
Wardell Gray, Erroll Garner & Howard McGhee - Blue Lou/ Groovin' High
Lionel Hampton Trio - Always/ September In The Rain
Billy Eckstine - Mr 'B' With A Beat
Duke Ellington & Jimmy Blanton - Pitter Panther Patter/ Mr J.B. Blues/ Sophisticated Lady/ Body & Soul
Jelly Roll Morton And His Red Hot Peppers - Sidewalk Blues/ Jelly Roll Blues/ The Pearls/ Kansas City Stomp
Carlos Montoya - Del Jazz Al Flamenco

I came across these looking at some Chet Baker 45s that ended up out of my price range, but these are all terrific and in really great condition. Listening to the Billy Eckstine right now.

I was told by a friend that I need to slow down. I guess me buying a copy of Scorpions - Blackout yesterday is evidence of that. My purchases these days are almost all thrift store and garage sale buys, and I enjoy it. But do I really need a Scorpions record or a collection of Sesame Street records?

Yeah, Stone has a problem. But, the whole pot/kettle thing keeps me from mentioning it. Here's what I grabbed for 50 cents each today...

I used to have those Monkees records and always liked the quirky stuff on them, like "Zilch."
