I'll check that link in a second. As for this

I was thinking more that a 50 watt might be too much speaker for the wattage of the amp. (my Black Pearl, for example, only has 30W speakers and is a, wait for it, 30W amp.

I actually know what I'm aiming at here. So the wattage rating for the speaker is essentially where it should beging to be in danger of ripping with a steady load at that wattage. Amps don't really work that way, though, they're much peakier with the output, and some amps rated (for example) 15 watts can blow a 15 watt speaker under the right circumstances (face melting solo). In your case, which is the norm, where the amp and speaker are matched, that means that the speaker begins to contribute to the precieved distortion around half-way up to full volume, and becomes more and more distorted (in a good way) as it gets up there.

But I want to play steel through this little Lightning, and with 15 watts to play with, it is likely that I'll be running it up over 5 in front of people. So the amp will begin to break up a little by the time I get to the volume I want at a small club. I can handle a little bit of distortion, that's ok, but I don't need the speaker adding to it. I want a big, clear low end, lots of headroom (no breaking up before the pre amp), and something that tames harsh high end, because this amp's treble can get ice picky. So when I put a 50 watt rated 12" in there, I should get a slightly lower actual volume than by using a 30W speaker, and I mean slightly, but in return I will get more bass, cleaner treble, and less distortion at higher volumes. That's the plan, anyway.

Kyle, you've got a nice mav. You should be able to sell it even on ebay for about what this would cost you.

Bite the bullet and get that steel. Chump change for a steel, man.

you can always sell the mav later, or decide to sell that lonestar for what you have in it, easy.

I thought about this same thing later when "playing pedal steel through it" finally dawned on me. No break up necessary. Look forward to hearing how it turns out.

Mashall salt/pepper grill cloth has arrived. Holy fuck is it nice. I can't wait to get this done. Somehow Bloor must see the finished product but I don't know how.

Just box it up and send it down. I'll give it a pounding and get it right back to you. :D

I'm sure we'll be making a Boston visit at some point.

Here's some more pics of that bass. I can't seem to capture the sparkly in the blue but it's awesome:

So I went to this nice little shitty guitar shop near a place I hit up for work a lot, looking for strings / lighter thumb pick / reverb pedal. Their pedal selection was bad but they had this used Korg Pandora PX3 (I think that's it) for $80 with good reverb on it, and it makes a great headphone amp. I pulled the trigger. I think I will velcro it into the back of the new amp so I have "on board" reverb.

Played pedal steel and guitar last night with the new band at their place. The pedal will be ok, need to get back up to speed on it and they need some material it fits in with, but using the finger picks on the acoustic was a BIG hit. Banjo rolls!

GAAAAAH there's a website that will design and print / engrave not only the faceplates but a logo as well for the grill cloth, to replace the Fender metal logo.

http://www.amplates.com/nameplates.html

I was going to half-ass it myself. I am one good idea and seventy bucks or so away from something professional.

Not necessarily guitar related, but my herd grew by one earlier this week when I picked up a 1973 Wurlitzer 200a. No sustain pedal, but came with the original legs, sound was pretty good, not too beat cosmetically, interior was clean, and had been tuned within the last year. A few weak notes makes me think that I'm going to have to make a few strike-line adjustments, but it seems like a relatively easy process. Overall, can't complain for the $350 I shelled out for it.

I apologize for this rather large/crappy pic. I picked this up recently :

1967 Gibson J45 (on the left)
Good action, deep low end, crisp top. Stays in tune.

Aaaaaaaaahhhhh fuck ... some clear stuff just came out. That looks incredible. I'm getting depressed about acoustic guitars lately. Mine is not good enough, it sounds dead as hell, and there's no such fucking thing as a deal with these... you get what you pay for. I don't want another $700 acoustic, I want a $2G acoustic. And I ain't getting one.

Whereas with electrics, a good pickup can get a broomstick about 70% of the way there. And you can totally find good deals, like that 1-pickup squire strat my father in law snagged for me from a yardsale / dumpster. That thing is killer. My buddy from Cave In really liked that one a lot. "This thing is awesome (huge grin)."

Gibson in a bit of trouble?

WASHINGTON | Wed Oct 12, 2011 6:06pm EDT

Quote:
(Reuters) - Gibson Guitar Corp.'s chief slammed the U.S. government on Wednesday for sending armed agents to raid two Tennessee factories under a law aimed at curbing the illegal harvest of tropical hardwoods.

"Armed people came in our factory ... evacuated our employees, then seized half a million dollars of our goods without any charges having been filed," Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz told reporters and others at a Washington lunch.

"I think it's a clear overreach," he said.

Government agents seized a total of over $1 million worth of rosewood, ebony and finished guitars from Gibson factories in Memphis and Nashville in raids in 2009 and August of this year, Juszkiewicz said.

He brought samples of rosewood and ebony to the lunch; these tropical hardwoods, used in guitar fingerboards, are prized for their strength and tone. Gibson's factories remain open "under great difficulty" because the raids took most of the company's raw materials, the CEO said.

The U.S. Justice Department declined on Wednesday to comment on the case but provided information on the Lacey Act, which aims to curb trafficking in wildlife, fish and plant products, including illegally obtained timber.

"By prohibiting trafficking in wood illegally harvested overseas, the Lacey Act prohibits companies from undercutting law-abiding U.S. wood products companies ... by trading in artificially inexpensive raw materials that have been illegally harvested from foreign forests," Justice and Interior department officials wrote in a letter.

Gibson Guitar uses a small fraction of the world's tropical hardwoods, compared to that used for furniture and flooring, and because it uses so little it can use it sustainably, Juszkiewicz said. He said his company has been a leader in this area with its line of SmartWood instruments, using wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

"The issue here is not illegal logging or some conservation abuse," he said. "The laws that are being identified by the Department of Justice have to do with protectionism by the country of origin, keeping work in that country and therefore not allowing something that isn't that value-added to be exported."

The Lacey Act, enacted in 1900 and amended in 2008 to broaden the range of plant products it includes, makes it illegal to trade in plants obtained in violation of U.S. or foreign law.

Those who unknowingly possess an instrument containing wood that was taken illegally "do not have criminal exposure," the government said in a letter responding to questions from members of Congress on the Gibson case.

Gibson has filed suit in federal court in Nashville to recover the seized material, but that suit has been stayed while the investigation continues, Juszkiewicz said.

Meantime, Gibson's chief said the law should be changed.

"I believe in the intent of the law ... but I do believe that the way it's currently written allows what's happening to me to happen to other companies, and that's wrong," he said.

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner invited Juszkiewicz to join him in the speaker's box to watch President Barack Obama's address on jobs to joint session of Congress on September 8.

It took me most of my 30's to figure that out, but you do get what you pay for. I've played decent $700 acoustics that ostensibly sound adequate in a good room. Problem is when using an expensive mic-pre coupled with a good mic (Telefunken, Royer, C12) the deficiencies of the guitar are glaring.
On a different note, if the song is not up to the task, none of it matters.

Agree on all counts.

I've had only this black alvarez artist series acoustic since mid-college, so 1996, never owned anything else acoustic. I've played it a bazillion hours. Thus, for me to realize its flaws, all I have to do is pick up a $1400 Taylor, or a good martin, etc, and right away it's obvious. Those guitars, every note jumps out. Every note is full and rounded, the whole box is moving and shaking and humming in a good way. I pick up mine again and it sounds like I strung up a milk crate with solid sides.

As for Gibson, is that article old? I could swear I've read that before. And if they are sourcing wood ilegally... then they're in trouble. Not much else to it, I wouldn't think.
